- NEW SPICERS SCENIC RIM TRAIL JOINS GREAT WALKS OF AUSTRALIA
Great Walks of Australia is delighted to announce a new walk to its current portfolio of guided multi-day hiking experiences that represent the 'best of the best' walks in Australia's most stunning locations.
The Scenic Rim Trail by Spicers, to be officially launched in June 2014, explores the Scenic Rim region of South East Queensland; a stunning collection of mountains, ridges, escarpments, forests and ancient volcanic plateaus set in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and surrounded by World Heritage-listed national parks.
“We are delighted to welcome the Scenic Rim Trail by Spicers to the collection,” said Chris Buykx, chair of Great Walks of Australia. “Spicers is a well-known luxury brand with a reputation for delivering first-class personal service and world-class cuisine. All the walks in the Great Walks of Australia portfolio allow visitors to combine a passion for walking with exclusive, comfortable and stylish accommodation and Australia's exceptional food and wine.
“It's not only scenery and spectacular natural environments that make a great walk. Combine these elements with gourmet produce and accommodation in luxury eco-lodges, unique wilderness camps and historic homesteads and you have the recipe for the walking holiday of a lifetime.
“Great Walks of Australia also showcases the diversity of quality walking experiences on offer in Australia; from Tasmania's World Heritage Areas to Victoria's dramatic coastline to South Australia's Flinders Ranges and the iconic Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory. They enable visitors to discover the people, places and fresh high-quality produce that make Australia unique.
“We look forward to working with Spicers and our other partners to increase awareness of Australia as an outstanding walking holiday destination,” he says.
All Great Walks of Australia walking groups are kept small, ensuring personal service. Many of the lodges and camps are exclusive to the operator of the walk. Expert guides also help to bring alive the culture, nature and history of each destination along the way.
The Scenic Rim Trail by Spicers is graded as an easy to moderate walk, covering a distance of approximately 30 kilometres (18 miles) over the four days.
The first day starts with a 5 kilometre (approximately 3 miles) ascend on a graded walking track to the twin peaks of Mount Mitchell, then an 8 kilometre (4 miles) descent to the luxurious safari-style camp, Spicers Canopy, in the late afternoon in time for a gourmet dinner and award winning local wines. Amazing birdlife and 360 degree views of the Scenic Rim are highlights on this day.
A relaxed second day includes an interesting half day hike following the Miller Vale Creek Circuit, starting and finishing at Spicers Canopy. The afternoon includes some free time for mountain-biking, relaxing and a local food and wine master class.
The third day is the most challenging, but most rewarding day of the trip. A 10 kilometre (approximately 6 miles) ascending trail through various types of terrain from ancient forests to rocky outcrops. A final ridge crossing and push to the summit rewards with the magnificent Spicers Peak Lodge and an evening of well-deserved pampering and exceptional food and wine.
On the fourth day, an early morning (optional but included) walk from Spicers Peak Lodge to Ryan's lookout is on offer for those who are keen. Or you can relax in the library with a book, play tennis, pamper yourself with a spa treatment at the lodge's dedicated day spa 'Spa Anise', or take a thrilling helicopter flight over Main Range National Park, before returning to Brisbane in the late morning.
Walks will depart from Brisbane every Friday from March to October. Prices for the opening season start from $1899 per person, twin share, and include all transfers, accommodation, guides and meals.
