At 5.50am (Melbourne time) on Thursday 3rd April, RB's third Boeing 787 brand new Dreamliner V8-DLC, powered by Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines, touched down at Tullamarine Airport and was greeted on arrival by RB Chief Commercial and Planning Officer Karam Chand, Country Manager Australia Brett McDougall and Airport Manager Brett Abercrombie.
After arrival, the new aircraft was towed to a specially decorated hangar at the airport where the airline hosted a reception to introduce the Dreamliner to business partners, trade professionals and media. Later, passengers travelling on the first Dreamliner service to Brunei were also treated to a special reception at the boarding gate prior to departure. Present as Guest of Honour was His Excellency Zakaria Ahmad, Brunei High Commissioner in Australia.
His Excellency said: “It is an honour to welcome the Royal Brunei Airlines' “Betterfly” to Melbourne. The Dreamliner is indeed a remarkable aircraft and together with the high standard of RB's customer service, I am confident this new product will provide the travelling passenger with a very high level of comfort.”
Speaking ahead of the launch the airline's Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion said: "Australia represents an important market for RB and the long awaited arrival of our Dreamliner will serve to cement our growing status as a real competitor in this market. We have been operating a service to Australia for three years but with this launch, Royal Brunei Airlines now becomes the first airline in the world to offer an exclusive Dreamliner service on all long-haul flights which again is a testament to our ambition to offer a truly personal and award-winning service to all passengers."
Royal Brunei Airlines is the first airline in South East Asia to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, providing passengers with an unrivalled travel experience in a quieter, more spacious cabin, while minimising the environmental impact of air travel. Passengers from Melbourne can now enjoy a seamless Dreamliner experience all the way to Brunei and beyond to Dubai and London Heathrow.
The cabin crew will be wearing the new heritage-inspired RB uniforms for the first time, after the uniforms were unveiled in Brunei in late February. The new uniforms are the latest phase of a rebranding program designed to share the unique culture of Brunei with the world. The new collection reflects tradition, while evoking a modern simplicity.
New female crew blouses have been tastefully detailed with traditional songket patterns along the hem, trim and back. Colours range from coral dust to morning sky to fresh mint, based on the seniority of the crew. This warm spectrum of colours has been designed to reflect the friendly and welcoming nature of the new RB brand. Matching traditional headscarves and flowing chestnut brown skirts will complete the updated ensemble.
Operating across four continents and flying to 15 major cities including London, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Manila, Royal Brunei Airlines has consistently focused on providing award-winning services throughout its 39-year history. This emphasis on improving customer service has recently been recognised with the airline's nomination as Best Airline Provider in Asia 2013 in The European Asia Awards, together with the award for Best Airline to Australasia from Travel Agents Choice, and also a Distinction Award in the 2014 REBRAND 100™ Global Awards which honour the most successful brand transformations worldwide.
