Dusit Thani Maldives invites guests to explore and experience the richness of Maldivian culture through the Call of the Sangu. Guests can now enjoy various local art forms from the the visual to the performing, fusing the traditional and the contemporary as a permanent and an integral feature of guest activities at the resort.
Call of Sangu kicked off on an auspicious note with the blowing of Sangu (triton) on the morning of 20th April. This was followed by the Arts and Crafts market where handicrafts and artwork encompassing lacquer work, jewellery made from coconut shells, and ornamental dhoni (boat) were on show. Celebrated international sand artist Afu (Afzal Shaafiu) enthralled guests with his talent through a live, contemporary sand art performance, shedding light on epic Maldivian tales, customs and traditions.
Guests witnessed the opening ceremony of this cultural extravanganza with the cutting of ribbon by Desmond Hatton, General Manager of Dusit Thani Maldives. It was an atmosphere replete with enthusiasm as boduberu performers created the ambience with their trditional drumming performance. According to Thanos Lionsatos, Director of Sales & Marketing, Dusit Thani Maldives, “Culture matters. That’s why it holds a unique place in our hearts. Call of the Sangu will leave everlasting impressions in our guests’ minds and will become one more reason for guests to return to Maldivian shores.”
Afu added “It is an inspiring event for everyone involved, including guests, artists and resort staff. Call of the Sangu strikes a perfect harmony in promoting the beauty of Maldivian art and culture.”
Renowned Maldivian artist Mariyam Shany Ahmed (Manje), delved into a world of fantasy and mythology through her live interactive painting performance. Guests also interacted with Manje and Afu during the afternoon painting workshops, organised for both kids and adults.
