Bridging Cultures: Discover Aboriginal Experiences Celebrates National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week
Connecting Past, Present and Future through Travel

National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June 2025) is a timely reminder for Australians and visitors alike to reflect on our collective journey—one shaped by a deep and complex history, and guided by hope for unity and understanding. This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, is a powerful call to action, urging us to explore how reconciliation continues to unfold through cultural exchange, shared knowledge, and meaningful connection.

For those seeking a deeper engagement with Australia’s First Nations peoples, Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE) offers a wealth of opportunities to travel with purpose. These immersive experiences are not just tours—they are invitations to understand the world’s oldest living cultures from the perspective of those who know them best.

Journey into Culture with Indigenous Guides

Across the country, more than 200 experiences from 53 DAE members offer visitors a chance to engage with Aboriginal culture in authentic and respectful ways. In Broome, Western Australia, Mabu Buru Tours provides intimate insights into Yawuru Country, with a portion of proceeds supporting the Mabu Buru Foundation’s work to preserve culture across the west Kimberley.

In Sydney, the Burrawa Aboriginal Climb Experience gives climbers a unique perspective atop the Harbour Bridge, guided by Indigenous storytellers who reveal the significance of the Aboriginal flag’s permanent installation on the summit—an emblem of pride and progress.

In regional New South Wales, Wiradjuri guide Mark Saddler of Bundyi Cultural Tours keeps his ancestral language alive by sharing it with guests on country. Meanwhile, on the Great Barrier Reef, Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel connects visitors to ancient ecological practices that have helped protect Australia’s marine life for generations.

Sharing Stories, Strengthening Culture

At the heart of each tour is a story, and at the heart of every story is a cultural bridge. According to Nicole Mitchell, Executive Officer of Discover Aboriginal Experiences, these journeys help build cultural strength and awareness through knowledge sharing.

The new Cultural Insights section on the DAE website is a dedicated platform for deeper learning. It features inspiring stories, historical context, and reflections on the importance of reconciliation in shaping a future built on understanding and mutual respect.

Also available is the 2025 DAE Media Kit, featuring a series of Storyteller interviews with Indigenous tourism leaders who speak candidly about the importance of their work. New video interviews spotlight trailblazing operators like Johani Mamid of Mabu Buru Tours, Elisha Kissick of Yura Tours, Dale Tilbrook of Dale Tilbrook Experiences, and Juan Walker from Walkabout Cultural Adventures.

Experience with Integrity and Authenticity

Each DAE member is carefully selected for their ability to represent their local culture with honesty, depth and respect. These are not scripted experiences—they are stories told by those who own them, giving travellers a rare and profound lens into Australia's past and present.

The Discover Aboriginal Experiences collective is part of Tourism Australia’s Signature Experiences of Australia program, which highlights the nation’s most enriching travel offerings. Whether foraging for native ingredients, visiting ancient rock art, or paddleboarding on sacred waterways, these journeys promise unforgettable encounters that bridge curiosity with connection.
