The Sun Will Come Out: Annie at the Capitol Theatre is Pure Joy

Annie
As I entered the Capitol Theatre last week, I felt a wave of excitement and nostalgia wash over me. Annie is a show I’ve loved for years, and the opportunity to see it come to life on stage once again was one I couldn’t pass up. This production, which has been reimagined for 2025, promised a fresh take on the beloved classic, and it certainly delivered. The music in Annie is, of course, a major highlight. The show features some of the most iconic and catchy songs in musical theatre. The cast's performances are top-notch, and the music is both nostalgic and fresh.

A Star-Studded Cast

Stephanie McNamara
The role of Annie is portrayed by four incredibly talented young performers, and on the night I attended, it was Stephanie McNamara who took the stage. From the moment she appeared, I knew I was in for something special. Her performance was exceptional, capturing the perfect balance of plucky optimism, charm, and vulnerability. Stephanie owned the role with impressive ease and confidence, especially for someone so young. When she belted out the iconic “Tomorrow” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” her voice filled the theatre with emotion. Her chemistry with the rest of the cast, particularly in her scenes with Daddy Warbucks, made for some truly heartwarming moments.

Anthony Warlow
Anthony Warlow’s portrayal of the wealthy, stern yet soft-hearted Daddy Warbucks was a standout in the production. His stage presence was magnetic, and he brought a new level of warmth and depth to a character I thought I knew so well. The duet between him and Stephanie on “I Think I’m Going to Like It” was one of the show’s most memorable moments. Their connection on stage was evident, and Warlow’s voice was perfectly suited to the role, making his transformation from wary guardian to loving father feel both genuine and moving.

Debora Krizak brought the iconic role of Miss Hannigan to life with a perfect blend of humour and malice. Her portrayal struck a wonderful balance between comedy and pathos, revealing the vulnerability behind the character’s cruelty. Her performance of “Easy Street” was a highlight of the night, and she effortlessly commanded the stage. Krizak proved that Miss Hannigan is not only a great villain but also a character with depth and layers, making her performance all the more compelling.

Greg Page
Greg Page, known for his role as an original Wiggle, brings a surprising and delightful energy to the stage as President Roosevelt in Annie. His portrayal of the iconic American president is both charming and charismatic, adding a unique flair to the role. With his natural stage presence and infectious enthusiasm, Page brings a fresh and engaging take on Roosevelt, blending warmth and authority effortlessly. His performance is a fun and memorable addition to the stellar cast, showcasing his versatility as a performer.

A Visually Stunning Production

The Capitol Theatre’s 2025 production of Annie was a visual feast that transported me straight to 1930s New York City. The stunning set design, vibrant costumes, and clever lighting brought each scene to life with such precision and care. I was particularly struck by how the production balanced grandeur with intimate moments. From the grim, cold orphanage to the luxurious Warbucks mansion with its grand staircase, the set design masterfully captured the contrast between Annie’s difficult life and the warmth she eventually finds. Each scene seamlessly flowed into the next, keeping me engaged from start to finish.

The choreography, reimagined with fresh energy, added an exciting layer to the performance, with the ensemble dancers filling the stage with movement and flair. The visual effects worked in harmony with the music, enhancing the storytelling and keeping me fully engaged from start to finish. Each scene flowed seamlessly into the next, balancing grandeur with intimate moments, creating a truly captivating experience.

The orchestra in Annie truly elevated the entire production, providing a rich, dynamic soundtrack that complemented the energy on stage. Their performance was seamless, capturing the emotion of each scene and enhancing the musicality of the iconic songs. The musicians' precision and passion were evident, particularly in the show’s most stirring moments. The vocal performances from the singers and ensemble were equally impressive, with each actor bringing depth and clarity to their songs. The harmonies were tight, and every note felt purposeful, helping to create an immersive experience that resonated with the audience long after the final curtain. Together, the orchestra and singers formed a harmonious partnership that brought the beloved musical to life in a way that felt fresh yet familiar.

A Timeless Message of Hope

Annie
What struck me most about Annie was its timeless message. Even though the story is set in the Great Depression, the themes of hope, resilience, and the power of family felt incredibly relevant. Annie’s optimism, despite her circumstances, was a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness and the belief that better days are ahead.

The show’s iconic songs, such as “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow,” remain as catchy and inspiring as ever. As the cast sang and danced, I couldn’t help but feel uplifted and full of hope. Annie’s journey from hardship to happiness serves as a beautiful reminder that no matter how tough life gets, there is always a reason to smile.

Final Thoughts

One of the things that I appreciated most about Annie at the Capitol Theatre was its appeal to audiences of all ages. The show is fun and engaging for children, with plenty of opportunities for them to sing along and participate. At the same time, the music, themes, and performances are sophisticated enough to keep adults entertained.
