Tropical Gateways Unite: New Direct Fiji–Cairns Route Takes Off

A New Era of Connectivity Between the Pacific and Tropical North Queensland

Fiji Airways has officially launched its much-anticipated direct service between Nadi and Cairns, marking the first-ever nonstop connection between these two vibrant destinations. Operating three times a week, the new route brings an extra 26,500 international inbound seats to Cairns each year, opening the door to fresh travel opportunities, tourism growth, and cultural exchange.

This development is a significant milestone for both Fiji and Far North Queensland, supported by the Queensland Government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, in collaboration with Cairns Airport and Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

Gateway for North American Travellers

The new Nadi–Cairns service does more than just link two tropical paradises. It also positions Cairns as a convenient onward destination for travellers from North America. Fiji Airways’ extensive transpacific network includes flights from major hubs such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas-Fort Worth, Vancouver, and Honolulu.

Tourism and Events Queensland is leveraging this connectivity by partnering with US-based travel app Hopper and Fiji Airways from April to June to boost awareness and drive North American bookings to Tropical North Queensland. This strategic promotion aims to showcase Cairns and the surrounding region as a must-visit destination for international tourists looking for a combination of reef, rainforest, and authentic local experiences.

A Boost for Tropical Tourism

For Cairns and the broader Tropical North Queensland region, the new route represents more than increased passenger numbers. It signals renewed confidence in the region’s tourism industry and offers greater access to a global market. From snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef to exploring the Daintree Rainforest, the region’s unique natural assets are now within easier reach for international visitors.

The new connection also enhances Fiji’s position as a regional hub, giving Australian travellers new options for exploring the South Pacific and connecting with onward international journeys.
