Cambodia Takes Flight: Techo International Airport Set to Soar in July 2025

Techo International Airport
A New Global Gateway for Southeast Asia

Phnom Penh is preparing for a transformative milestone in its aviation and tourism journey with the much-anticipated launch of Techo Takhmao International Airport in July 2025. Poised to be the ninth-largest airport in the world, this colossal infrastructure project will mark a new era for Cambodia as it expands its global connectivity and tourism potential.

Spanning an impressive 2,600 hectares, the airport is not only a feat of engineering but a symbol of Cambodia’s aspirations to become a leading player in the regional travel landscape.

From Vision to Reality: Building an Aviation Marvel

Initially designed to accommodate 13 million passengers annually, Techo International Airport is expected to ramp up to 30 million by 2030 and ultimately 50 million by 2050. After facing pandemic-related delays, construction has resumed at full pace. The USD 1.5 billion project is a joint venture between the Cambodian government and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation, with construction led by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd.

Named in honour of military commanders Techo Meas and Techo York, who once defended Kandal Province, the airport is rooted in local heritage while embracing a bold, global future.

Architectural Innovation Meets Climate Conscious Design

British architecture powerhouse Foster + Partners, known for their work on iconic landmarks like the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, has infused the design of Techo International Airport with sustainability and elegance.

The terminal features a lightweight steel grid shell roof canopy, allowing filtered natural light to flood the interiors while shielding passengers from Cambodia’s tropical weather. A single continuous canopy stretches seamlessly from the drop-off area to the airside gates, offering both aesthetic impact and practical protection.

Connecting the Past, Present, and Future

The airport will serve as a powerful companion to Cambodia’s newly opened Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport, which began operations in 2023. That facility, situated 40 kilometres east of Angkor Wat, welcomed over 1 million international visitors in 2024.

Together, these two major aviation hubs will provide unprecedented access to Cambodia’s cultural landmarks, beaches, and eco-tourism destinations.

Techo International Airport’s opening is not only expected to boost passenger capacity but also drive economic growth, attract investment, and support the government’s long-term tourism development goals.

A Soaring Future Ahead

As the world looks to explore destinations rich in history, hospitality, and heritage, Cambodia is preparing to meet that demand with style and ambition. Techo International Airport is more than just a transportation hub — it is a bold statement of Cambodia’s readiness to welcome the world.
