visitors exploring the Taungthaman Bridge and Taungthaman Lake on the full moon day of Taboung |
Taungthaman Bridge and Taungthaman Lake, iconic landmarks in Myanmar’s Mandalay Region, witnessed a remarkable surge in visitor numbers during this year’s Taboung season. Over 10,000 domestic and international tourists gathered at the site during the recent public holiday period, turning this tranquil destination into a vibrant hub of celebration and sightseeing.
According to U Soe Win, secretary of the Taungthaman Bridge Maintenance Committee, the full moon day of Taboung saw the highest turnout. This seasonal festival, one of Myanmar’s most culturally significant observances, brought with it not only religious and festive charm but also an unprecedented influx of travelers.
A Holiday Like No Other
On regular days, Taungthaman Bridge and the surrounding lake usually receive around 400 to 500 visitors. But during the Taboung holidays, that number soared to over 2,000 per day. U Soe Win noted that visitors came from across the country, including Mandalay, PyinOoLwin, Taunggyi, and Yangon, transforming the serene setting into a lively and colourful gathering spot.
The bridge, believed to be the oldest and longest teakwood bridge in the world, becomes especially enchanting during the Taboung season. The golden glow of the full moon reflecting off the water and the silhouette of the bridge create a picture-perfect moment that draws photographers, pilgrims, and wanderers alike.
International Appeal Holds Steady
While the domestic travel numbers surged, the steady stream of international visitors also added to the energy. Tourists from Thailand, Vietnam, and South Korea continue to show strong interest in Mandalay Region’s cultural heritage, with Taungthaman Bridge and Lake topping many of their itineraries.
The serene waters of Taungthaman Lake and the historic charm of the bridge offer a timeless escape, especially during seasonal festivals like Taboung, when the atmosphere is filled with candles, rituals, and the quiet joy of reflection.
A Destination on the Rise
The recent turnout underscores Taungthaman’s growing popularity and the increasing appeal of off-the-beaten-path cultural destinations in Southeast Asia. As local authorities continue to maintain and promote the bridge and lake area, it’s clear that the site is becoming more than just a local gem — it’s evolving into a must-see experience for travelers seeking authentic moments steeped in history and tradition.
With the Taboung festival serving as a major draw, future seasons are expected to attract even more visitors, making this quiet corner of Mandalay a hotspot for both celebration and serenity.
