Week 1 brings laughs, legends, and loud applause to the Harbour City
A Month-Long Celebration of Laughter
Sydney is officially the funniest place on Earth right now. From 21 April to 18 May, the Sydney Comedy Festival returns in full force to mark its 20th anniversary, and the opening week promises to be one of the most unforgettable yet. With over 370 shows taking place across the city’s most iconic venues, this year's festival is packed with the biggest international stars, razor-sharp Aussie favourites, and the freshest new voices in comedy.
Whether you’re in the mood for satirical wit, storytelling genius, or some gloriously chaotic stand-up, week one of the festival offers a spectacular start to this month-long celebration of hilarity.
Week 1 Must-Sees: Big Names, Big Laughs
The opening week features an all-star lineup that delivers on every front. Flying in from across the globe are some of the comedy world’s most recognisable and riotous names.
Catch the sharp and unapologetic Sara Pascoe (UK) as she brings her brutally honest insights to the stage. Iliza Shlesinger (USA) returns with her signature high-energy delivery, while Rhys Darby (NZ) mixes absurdity and adventure in his own uniquely physical style.
Also lighting up the stage is Reuben Kaye, a larger-than-life performer blending cabaret with biting satire. Drew Lynch (USA) will charm with his underdog energy and self-deprecating humour, while Scottish sensation Daniel Sloss promises an exclusive show that’s already stirring serious buzz—so much so that fans are lining up on the waitlist.
Fresh and Funny: Don’t Miss This Debut
In the spirit of the festival’s commitment to fresh talent, one standout in week one is Elliot Ulm: Graphic Design Live. Running from 25 to 27 April, this award-winning debut hour is not what you’d expect. With deadpan brilliance, Ulm dissects the chaos and absurdity of the design world through what he calls a "completely serious portfolio presentation." Spoiler alert: it’s hilarious.
It’s one of many new shows pushing the boundaries of what stand-up can be—original, absurd, and completely unforgettable.
Venues That Come Alive
From the grand Enmore Theatre to intimate club stages, the festival spills into every corner of Sydney. Each venue has its own vibe, and hopping between shows is part of the fun. The city transforms into one big comedy circuit where spontaneity reigns and every night offers a new discovery.Whether you’re booking a single show or bingeing back-to-back performances, the Sydney Comedy Festival is a choose-your-own-laughs adventure.
