Introducing Loloma Hour: A New Way to Travel with Purpose
Loloma Hour
One Hour That Makes a Lasting Impact
In a bold move that redefines what it means to travel sustainably, Fiji has introduced a world-first: Loloma Hour. More than just an eco-initiative, it’s a powerful invitation for visitors to give back to the destination they’ve come to enjoy. Inspired by the Fijian value of loloma—to act with love and generosity—this unique concept encourages travellers to spend one hour during their stay contributing to environmental, cultural, or community causes.
From planting coral reefs to restoring mangroves and connecting with local traditions, Loloma Hour is a refreshing take on tourism with heart. Unlike the typical happy hour, there are no cocktails or canapés—instead, it’s an hour of meaningful action with a lasting effect on Fiji’s people and places.
A Movement Grounded in Generosity
Tourism Fiji’s Chief Marketing Officer, Srishti Narayan, describes the initiative as a celebration of giving over taking.
“True happiness comes not just from what you take, but what you give,” she says. “We want our visitors to leave Fiji not only relaxed and rejuvenated, but more deeply connected to the idea that everyone can play a role in preserving the natural and cultural beauty of the places they visit.”
The country has set an ambitious goal: to contribute 5,000 hours to sustainability efforts within the first year of the program. Loloma Hour is open to everyone—families, couples, and solo travellers alike—proving that even one hour can make a big difference.
Four Ways to Give Back
Visitors can participate in Loloma Hour through a variety of activities, grouped into four core categories:
1) Giving Back to Wildlife
Take part in marine research, conservation walks or species protection efforts. Highlights include the Fiji Crested Iguana Conservation Program at Likuliku Lagoon Resort and the Awakening Shark Dive experience with Barefoot Kuata Island Resort.
2) Giving Back to the Community
Get hands-on with local culture through weaving, storytelling and cooking. Guests at Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa can enjoy a Fijian Culture Hour or Cooking Class, while Lomani Island Resort offers an insightful Local Village Tour.
3) Giving Back to the Reef
Loloma Hour
Dive into coral planting, reef restoration, or clam farming. Activities include Reef Restoration with Six Senses Fiji and Coral Rehabilitation at Seventh Heaven Fiji.
4) Giving Back to the Coastline
Help rejuvenate the landscape with tree planting, beach clean-ups or mangrove restoration. Resorts like Shangri-La Yanuca Island and InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa lead efforts such as mangrove planting and the ‘Litter for a Latte’ cleanup program.
