Wollongong Secures ‘Gran Fondo’ & Multi-Sport Festival Event

Wollongong

Wollongong has landed the rights to host a major sporting event this year set to thrust the Illawarra region into the national spotlight.

Destination NSW, in partnership with Wollongong City Council and events management company USM Events, have collaborated to stage a two-day signature cycling and sports festival dubbed the Wollongong Gran Fondo (Italian for long distance).

The event is being positioned as NSW’s major cycling event, triathlon and multi-sport, with objectives to become Australia’s largest mass-participation cycling event and a key fixture on the global cycling calendar.

Riders will compete in either a 100 or 160 kilometre road race that will start and finish in Wollongong, taking in key towns in the Illawarra region.

The VIP event will include members of the Orica GreenEdge pro-cycling team, who are currently competing for the first time in the Tour de France
