Families Urged to Get Involved in Biennale of Sydney

NSW residents and visitors are being encouraged to take advantage of the free cultural events on offer at the 18th Biennale of Sydney, which receives funding from the NSW Government. Culture buffs can feast their eyes on the art of collaboration at the 18th instalment of Australia’s leading contemporary visual arts event, presented free.

Mr George Souris Minister for Tourism, Major Events, and the Arts, said the Biennale of Sydney, which runs until September 16, is the Asia Pacific’s largest exhibition of contemporary art. “The Biennale of Sydney is held every two years and is one of Australia's largest and most exciting contemporary visual arts events held over a three-month period,” Mr Souris said.

The event includes works by more than 100 artists from Australia and around the world. The last Biennale in 2010 attracted more than 517,000 visits to event venues. An estimated 408,000 additional visitors also enjoyed outdoor works in the Royal Botanic Gardens and an estimated 1.3 million enjoyed Roxy Paine’s large-scale tree sculpture at Circular Quay.

“The Biennale of Sydney is a fantastic tourist attraction for the city with attendances and visitors doubling over the last five events,” Mr Souris said. “Access Economics assessed the economic contribution of the 17th Biennale of Sydney (2010) to the NSW economy at $63.9 million, up from $53 million, $52 million of which was contributed to the NSW economy.

“The 18th Biennale of Sydney will be presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Carriageworks, Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay and Cockatoo Island."
