New Art In Old Guildford Lane

Venture beyond the legal precinct borders, far from the usual Flinders Lane haunts of Melbourne Australia, to where edgy, independent art makes its home.

The old red brick warehouses of Guildford Lane cower beneath the looming ME Bank tower near Queen and La Trobe streets, but their inhabitants are anything but meek.

External signposts – vertical gardens, paste-ups, and framed images – indicate the innovative gallery spaces within.

The big name is Utopian Slumps, which brought Collingwood cred, curated exhibitions and killer opening parties to this part of town.

You'll also find Screen Space, promoting screen culture, and Beam Contemporary, which gives young Australian artists a run.

Guildford Lane is sandwiched between the 1000 £ Bend cafĂ© and gallery, and Badger vs. Hawk with its bottled coffee and laneway bar. What more could you want?
