Why Aussies Just Can’t Resist a Beach Break

Sun, Sand and Simplicity Win Our Hearts

When it comes to travel, Australians know what they love—and for most, it’s all about the beach. According to new research from Money.com.au, more than a third of Aussie travellers (37%) name beach holidays as their number one getaway choice, outshining all other travel types by a wide margin. Whether it’s the salty air, the soothing sound of waves, or the freedom of going barefoot for a week, beach breaks are where Australians feel most at home—even when they’re away.

The Generational Love for the Coast

Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge to the coast, with 41% of both groups saying a beach holiday is their top pick. It’s not hard to see why—beach destinations offer the perfect mix of relaxation and social atmosphere. Add in the appeal of low-cost activities like swimming, sunbathing or beach volleyball, and it becomes the ideal getaway for younger Aussies wanting to unwind without emptying their wallets.

Adventure Comes Second, But Still Makes Waves

While Aussies love to relax, they’re not afraid to move. Active holidays—including hiking, diving, and snowboarding—came in second place with 12% of the vote. These were especially popular among younger travellers, particularly Millennials (18%), who enjoy combining physical activity with exploration and nature.

City Lights and Cultural Delights

Urban holidays and cultural trips tied for third place, each attracting 11% of respondents. City lovers, especially Gen Z (22%) and Gen X (14%), are drawn to the buzz of cosmopolitan destinations with their thriving food scenes and historic attractions. Meanwhile, Boomers are leaning toward culture-focused escapes (14%), proving there’s always room for learning, even on holiday.

Hit the Road, Jack – And Don’t Forget the Snacks

Road trips are another Aussie favourite, chosen by 10% of respondents, and particularly popular with Boomers (20%). The freedom to explore regional gems, take scenic detours and travel at your own pace makes the open road a compelling option—especially for those seeking a holiday that’s equal parts nostalgic and adventurous.

Cruises, Staycations and Wellness – Lower on the List

Cruises captured the attention of 9% of Australians, while seasonal getaways sat at 4%. Surprisingly, staycations (3%), camping (2%) and wellness retreats (1%) trailed at the bottom—perhaps reflecting a national urge to really go somewhere when the opportunity arises.

Why the Beach Wins – Every Time

Money.com.au Editor Sean Callery explains that Aussies are prioritising downtime over doing more. Beach holidays offer the ultimate recharge—easy, affordable, and endlessly relaxing. Whether it’s a day trip to a coastal town or a tropical escape across the seas, the beach remains Australia’s happy place.
