The route offers stunning aerial perspectives of Patricia and Pyramid Lakes, framed by the rugged peaks of the Rockies. After your hike, warm up with a hot drink or a meal at Aalto at Pyramid Lake Lodge, where the cozy atmosphere complements the scenic surroundings.
- Access: From downtown Jasper, take Pyramid Lake Road to the parking area at the far end, past Pyramid Lake Lodge.
2. Lake Annette Loop
The tranquil Lake Annette Loop is a winter favorite for its serene setting and easy navigation. This well-marked trail circles the frozen lake, surrounded by alpine views that inspire a sense of calm. Pack a thermos and snacks to enjoy at the picnic tables by the beach area—it’s a perfect spot to soak in the beauty of winter.
- Access: From Jasper, follow Highway 16 east toward Edmonton. Turn onto Maligne Lake Road, cross the Athabasca River, and make your first right. At one kilometre, take the left turn toward Lake Annette.

- Access: The trail circles the townsite, so you can start from anywhere. Look for the bear symbols to guide your way.
4. Maligne Canyon
Winter transforms Maligne Canyon, the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, into an icy spectacle. Frozen waterfalls, icicles, and towering ice pillars create a surreal atmosphere. The trail includes six bridges that offer incredible views of the icy depths. For an immersive experience, join a guided tour with Maligne Canyon Icewalks, which takes you into the heart of this iconic site.
- Access: From Jasper’s east end, take Highway 16 east for three kilometres. Turn right onto Maligne Lake Road, cross the Athabasca River, and keep left at the fork. Maligne Canyon is on your left.
- Note: Due to recent wildfires, parts of the Maligne Canyon area are currently closed. Check Parks Canada’s website for updates before planning your visit.
What to Bring for Winter Hiking
- Microspikes: Slip-on traction aids that provide grip on icy trails, essential for routes like Maligne Canyon.
- Gaiters: These waterproof covers protect your boots and keep snow and moisture out, ensuring warm, dry feet.
