Well first off you have to see the city skyline! Take in the view from 46 floors up at the Shibuya Sky Observation Deck! At 229 metres, the open-air space provides 360° views and a whole lot of perspective.
Considered one of the best places in Tokyo for flower viewing, the Meguro River in the neighbourhood of Nakameguro should be on your list if you’re visiting during cherry blossom season. Lanterns illuminate the trees in the evening and the blossoms create a whimsical tunnel that just has to be seen to be believed.
Escape the city and visit the UNESCO Natural World Heritage site of the Ogasawara Islands. Outdoor lovers will be overjoyed with endless options for hiking, snorkelling and viewing marine life in its natural environment. Getting there is an adventure in itself as a 24-hour long ferry ride from central Tokyo is the only way to get there. Trust us, it’s worth it!
Stroll amongst 100,000 trees in the heart of Tokyo at Meiji-jingu Shrine. The shrine was built in 1920 to commemorate Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. It’s a great place to experience a traditional Shinto shrine and escape the bustle of Harajuku.
But it’s not just spectacular locations to be discovered, there are also traditional arts and crafts, like Edo Kiriko (cut glassware). The fine carving of coloured glass has been handed down through generations since the 19th century and there are both traditional and modern designs. Each one is captivating as the light reflects off them like a kaleidoscope.
You’re spoilt for choice at Okutama in western Tokyo with its mountains, lakes, caves, breweries and charming cafés. Not to mention activities such as hiking, fishing, kayaking and rafting! And if you needed any more convincing, the autumn leaves are truly spectacular. ©Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau
