There are countless stories about Stern Grove to tell, and we want to hear yours. Find out how sharing your Stern Grove memories can win you a VIP package to see the San Francisco Symphony perform at the Grove!
Starting with the Symphony
Stern Grove Festival and San Francisco Symphony go way back—90 years to be exact. Rosalie M. Stern purchased Stern Grove and gave it as a gift to the City of San Francisco in 1931, in memory of her husband Sigmund, a prominent civic leader. On June 4, 1932, Stern Grove was dedicated. Two weeks later, the San Francisco Symphony played the first concert in the Grove. The Symphony was conducted by Gaetano Merola, an Italian immigrant who founded the San Francisco Opera.
Celebrating 85 Years of the Stern Grove Festival
Years later, in 1937, Rosalie founded the Stern Grove Festival, and the Symphony once again played to celebrate the occasion. As part of her mission, Rosalie hired the Symphony in their off season, to support them through the Great Depression and to provide free music for all. The two organizations have continued their partnership for nearly a century now, and the Symphony always has a spot in the festival calendar.
