It is a country of great cultural and biological diversity, known for its beaches and coral reefs. Inland are active volcanoes, granite Mt. Wilhelm, dense rainforest and hiking routes like the Kokoda Trail.
It is also a prime birdwatching destination where 38 of the known 39 species of the Bird of Paradise can be spotted.
With their striking colours and bright plumage, they stand out as some of the world’s most dramatic and attractive birds.
In total, Papua New Guinea is home to more than 700 different species of birds including the Hooded Pitohui, the only poisonous bird in the world, and the enormous Cassowary that stands nearly six feet tall!
Birdwatchers can also spot other rare breeds such as the Fire-Maned Bowerbird and the Crested Berrypecker.
There’s no set season for organising a trip to discover the truly beautiful birdlife waiting in Papua New Guinea, however the dry season from June to October is recommended to achieve the optimum experiences.
