From here, ferries go to nearby Ellis Island, with its historic Immigration Museum, and the iconic Statue of Liberty.
The Jersey Shore includes notable resort towns like historic Asbury Park and Cape May.
New Jersey's coastline
New Jersey offers 130 miles of sandy beaches with barrier islands and bays dotted with majestic lighthouses and fishing villages.
Beach-side cities
Atlantic City is New Jersey’s most well-known coastal city. Visitors look to enjoy the wide sandy beaches, the city's boardwalk (the first in the USA), and its class casino resorts and entertainment.
Other cities with beaches include : Wildwoods, Seaside Heights, Ocean City, and Asbury Park.
Long Beach Island
Long Beach Island is an 18-milelong island with small shore towns and long stretches of white sand. Beach Haven is the island’s main leisure and entertainment centre.
For a quieter beach experience Spring Lake, Ocean Grove and Stone Harbor offer a more sedate stay, with historic lighthouses, preserved natural areas, inlets and bays.
Cape May,
a small town at the southernmost point of the Jersey Shore, has many of its colourful Victorian homes (“Painted Ladies”) that have been turned into boutique bed & breakfasts.
Cape May is also home to grand Congress Hall which is America’s oldest seaside resort, dating back to 1816.
The small towns of Barnegat Light and Harvey Cedars, both located on the north end of Long Beach Island are laid-back.
Cape May's peninsular shape, proximity to ocean and bay, and diversity of habitat make the area a good birding spot year round.
The Cape May Observatory offers birdwatching trips to view more than 400 species of birds during fall migration.
The five-mile barrier beach of Sandy Hook is a year-round birding location on the state’s list of Important Bird and Birding Areas as well as on the National Audubon Society’s list of globally significant birding areas.
