Cowra residents are reflecting on the 70th Anniversary of the Cowra Prisoners of War Breakout this August, and will host high level Japanese dignitaries during a program of events to remember and commemorate the historic event.
On 5 August 1944, the largest Prisoner of War breakout in modern military history took place in Cowra, when over 1,000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass escape from the camp, which claimed the lives of 231 Japanese prisoners and four Australian soldiers.
A long lasting friendship between the people of Cowra and the nation of Japan has developed since the breakout. Officially opened in 1979, Cowra Japanese Garden is a stunning 5 hectare strolling garden, the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. It remains a symbol of reconciliation between Australia and Japan and is connected to the Breakout site and former Prisoner of War Camp by Sakura Avenue.
Until 10 August, a series of events including exhibitions, performances, cultural activities and dinners will be held in Cowra. For details, visit the Tourism Cowra website.

Ready to Set Sail: Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2014
Anticipation is building as thousands prepare to celebrate over three decades of sailing from 16th to 23rd August at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2014; the largest offshore regatta in the southern hemisphere.
The international yachting event has evolved over the past 31 years into a spectacular display of on-water racing paired with the finest epicurean cuisine, exclusive fashion shows, flowing champagne and celebrity guests. The landmark event will be officially opened with a Raising of the Flag ceremony and firework display at Hamilton Island Yacht Club on Saturday 16th August, by owner, Bob Oatley, Hamilton Island's CEO, Glenn Bourke and Audi Australia's Managing Director, Andrew Doyle.
The sailing events will then unfold with both sailors and spectators enjoying the on-water display. The beautiful Whitsundays' courses attract sailing's elite, and cater for the full spectrum of keelboats – from non-spinnaker cruising yachts through to Grand Prix level racers. With over 160 yachts already entered and more expected in the coming weeks, the carnival is set to be one of the best yet.
Complimenting the sailing activity is this year's impressive shore-side social calendar; one ensuring the sailors' family and friends return year after year while also attracting a wider spectrum of travellers in search of a unique winter getaway.
Australian portrait artist and Audi ambassador, Vincent Fantauzzo will open a new exhibition at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club inspired by the ocean and commissioned exclusively for the event by the luxury car brand. His painting of wife, Asher Keddie, titled Love Face, won the 2013 People's Choice Award.
Audi ambassadors and iconic Australian chefs Matt Moran, Kylie Kwong and Shannon Bennett will delight guests with unique, new gastronomic experiences. Shannon Bennett will bring his signature haute cuisine to qualia with a degustation-style menu celebrating local Whitsundays produce. Matt Moran's 'Chiswick' style Long Pavilion dinner will reflect his paddock-to-plate food philosophy and renowned chef, Kylie Kwong will present an intimate, Chinese family-style dinner at Pebble Beach.

WINNING THE HEARTS OF THE WORLD WITH MALAYSIAN CUISINES
Ask any tourist what they like about Malaysia. Chances are, one of them is food. Yes, Malaysia is truly a food paradise. In fact, Malaysians love to eat so much that it has become part of our lifestyle and culture. When a Malaysian meets a friend, the first thing he or she will ask is “Have you eaten yet?”. This is our Malaysian way to say “How are you?”
Barton suggested readers to try Penangs famous street food - Char Kway Teow, Hokkien Mee and Assam Laksa. As a matter of fact, Penang Assam Laksa was voted seventh out of 50 most delicious foods in the world by CNN. Malaysia?s sole entry beat out Indonesia's Beef Rendang (No. 11), Singapore's twin national dishes, Chicken Rice (No. 45) and Chilli Crab (No. 35), and Thailand's Tom Yum Goong (No. 8), Nam Tok Moo, a meaty dish of grilled pork and toasted rice (No. 19), and its signature green papaya salad, Som Tam (No. 46).
Penang Assam Laksa is a tangy fish-based soup made from tamarind, dried slices of sour mangosteen, shredded fish (mackerel) and sliced vegetables, such as cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, mint and ginger. A visit to Malaysia will not be complete without a taste of this award-winning street food.
Apart from Nasi Lemak, the Wonton Soup which is a Chinese speciality is made from meat flavoured with sesame oil, soy sauce and wrapped with wonton wrappers. The word “Wonton” means “swallowing a cloud” because the wonton floating on the soup resembles clouds. The food is tasty and best taken with noodles. In winning the MasterChef UK title, Catherine Chin has put Malaysian cuisine on the world map.
Satay, the king of all Malaysian cuisines
If tourists were to choose and vote for their favourite Malaysian cuisine, chances are, Satay will be the answer. Satay is a Malay gastronomic delight made from marinated, skewered and grilled meats on sticks and served with tasty peanut sauce. The commonly used barbecued meats are beef, chicken and mutton but today, Satay has evolved to include more varieties, such as fish, rabbit, venison and pork. In Malaysia, the well-known places to have a tasty bite of Satay is in Kajang town.
Satay is so popular among tourists and locals alike that there are franchises of Satay restaurants outside Malaysia in Europe and USA. As a matter of fact, Malaysia Airlines "satay service" was named the World's Best Airline Signature Dish in the 2013 SKYTRAX World Airline Awards. Hence, it is often said, “To taste Satay is to enjoy a taste of Malaysia.”
For Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia, the popular cuisines are created by the diverse tribes and indigenous communities there. Most of their specialities are made from wild plants, herbs and fruits as well as seafood and freshwater fishes. Among the popular dishes are Jaruk (Wild boar or fish cooked with rice in bamboo shoots), Hinava (fermented dish of fish, ginger shallots, chillies in lime juice) and Manok Pansoh (Chicken, mushrooms, lemongrass and tapioca leaves in bamboo shoots).
The best time to enjoy a taste of Malaysia is during Fabulous Food 1Malaysia, a three-month food festival held nationwide since 2009. This year, Fabulous Food 1Malaysia will be held from August to October, so make a trip this Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and indulge in a fabulously delicious food adventure here.

Winning awards and accolades in cuisines.
Thumbs up to Malaysian cuisines. Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world, has listed Penang as the world's number #1 foodies for 2014. Penang bagged the top spot beating other culinary spots like Australia, Spain, Italy and the United States. According to Lonely Planet's editor Robin Barton, “Penang's food reflects the intermingling of the many cultures that arrived after it was setup as a trading port in 1786, from Malays to Indians, Acehnese to Chinese, Burmese to Thais.”Barton suggested readers to try Penangs famous street food - Char Kway Teow, Hokkien Mee and Assam Laksa. The triumph continues in Master Chef UK
Malaysian cuisines continued to make headlines recently. Catherine Chin Wan Ping Coombes made Malaysia proud by winning the coveted MasterChef UK 2014 with her starter of Wonton Soup, main course of Nasi Lemak, and dessert of Vanilla and Coconut Pannacotta with Charred Pineapple, Freeze-dried Mango and "Pineapple and Lime Air". Nasi Lemak is an aromatic steamed rice with pandan aroma with cooked coconut santan and sizzling hot and spicy “sambal” or ground chillies with a thick gravy. To give it an authentic taste, roasted peanuts, salty dried anchovies and hard boiled eggs are added. Nasi Lemak is a national heritage cuisine of Malaysia and has evolved over the decades to include more varieties, such as fried eggs, cockles, sambal squids, fish, chicken, mutton and beef rendang. Malaysians love taking Nasi Lemak as breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper.Apart from Nasi Lemak, the Wonton Soup which is a Chinese speciality is made from meat flavoured with sesame oil, soy sauce and wrapped with wonton wrappers. South Korea leans on pop culture to hike tourist arrival
South Korean music has come of age. In the winter of 2012/13, the
South Korean pop star Psy capyured the imagination of the world and saw
his Gangnam Style video reach a billion viewers on YouTube, a
performance that wasn’t lost on the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).
For quite some time the KTO has been putting its shoulder to the mouse
pad in trying to tap into the power of social media by courting
celebrities with a strong online following along with a new campaign,
“Tour Imagination,” that is centered around a drawing that will have its
winners create online content.
After decades of promoting an austere branding of the country as the “Land of the Morning Calm,” the KTO changed direction under its last director, Charm Lee, who thought that all that calm was not what people were seeking on vacation. Since his 2013 resignation, the KTO has continued to try for a more exciting tourism proposition that ignites the imagination of the visitor.
Since 2000, the country’s tourist arrival figures have grown from five million to 12 million last year and the KTO has set a target of 20 million over the next few years. That number might not be as ambitious as it sounds thanks to the popularity of Korean pop culture in its neighboring countries, which also happen to be among the most powerful markets for tourism in the world today. Korean pop music is very popular in China and Japan.
Tour Imagination includes a random drawing of eight winners who will each receive a four-day vacation for two to Korea this October and November. The winners of the drawing will be asked to record videos of their journeys, and share them online. Participants must enter for the chance to visit Korea by Aug. 31 at www.tourimagination.com.
The KTO has been involved in inviting online celebrities from important markets such as Thailand, Japan, China and the U.S to visit Korea and experience the country’s latest styles, drama, and beauty treatments. The idea is to attract people who by their celebrity status attract media. One such online celebrity, Michelle Phan, is described by Google as “an American make-up demonstrator and entrepreneur who became notable as a YouTube celebrity. Phan’s YouTube channel has over six million subscribers and she has uploaded over 300 videos.”
The KTO also unveiled new brand slogan, “Imagine Your Korea,” which will have Korean pop star BIGBANG serve as its honorary ambassador and for the To:ur Imagination campaign. BIGBANG is also the star of a global TV ad for KTO.
In April, the Korean government installed a new temporary tax refund policy on hotel stays that will be in effect for a full year. Only international visitors who stay in a certified hotel for a total of more than two nights are entitled to the refunds.
In order to receive the tax refund, eligible recipients should leave Korea within three months from their check-out date and must present a Hotel Tax Refund Form, which they can receive from their hotel, at a designated Duty-Free Zone.

COME, DANCE MALAYSIAN STYLE
Gangnam Style fever is over. Now it is Malaysian dance fever. This Visit Malaysia Year 2014, there are a lot to dance about.
From the Malaysia International Performing Arts Festival, Borneo Cultural Festival, Sibu International Dance Festival, Sabah International Folklore Festival, there are many exciting festivals and events all year round.
These events frequently showcase a myriad of colourful performances of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic groups resembling a joyous celebration of Malaysia’s multi-racial and multi-cultural heritag. It reflects the peace and harmony, unity and tolerance of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic communities.
Feast your senses on the pomp, splendour and pageantry of these festivals featuring songs, dances, arts, traditions and cuisines of Malaysia. With so many dance activities awaiting your discovery, it will be good to gain an insight into the dance scenes in Malaysia.
Let us start with the Malay dance. The fast-paced movement of “joget” dance, normally danced by couples is a favourite among tourists. The “joget” introduced to the Malays in Melaka during the early 16th Century was influenced by the popular Portuguese folk dance, the Branjo. The fast hand and leg movements together with the cheerful music beat make “joget” well-liked by both young and old generations. In some instances, tourists who are quite sporting even join in to “joget” together!
“Grace, poise and regal” best describes the “Inang” dance. The dance was performed in palaces during the era of the Malaccan Sultanate. The word “Inang” was derived from the word “Mak Inang”, a nanny who took care of the children. Another Malay dance, the “Zapin” was introduced by the Arab traders and missionaries. The Malay Zapin dance was created with the assimilation of the original Arabic Zapin dance and was popular among the royalty.
Apart from the Malay dance, other ethnic dances in Malaysia like the Chinese and Indian dance have their roots back in the country of origin. Chinese dance dated back over 5,000 years to the Royal Court dances of the semi-divine culture of the Zhou, Tang and Song Dynasties, where the character of the nation was expressed through dance. The dance movements were influenced by folk stories, historic figures and classical myths and legends and expressed the society’s respect for morality, compassion, loyalty, wisdom and trustworthiness. The arrival of Chinese merchants to Melaka centuries ago brought along the art of dancing.
The Chinese lion and dragon dance are two most popular dances in Malaysia. For those who have not seen the lion dance, well, you better catch a glimpse of it. Be captivated by the acrobatic movements of dancers on stilts in their vibrant lion costumes!
The Kun Seng Keng Dragon and Lion Dance Association in Malaysia is a world-class champion lion dance troupe, winning a streak of international awards, such as the Genting World Lion Dance Championship and International Lion Dance Tournament. In fact, Malaysia is known for its immense contributions to the popularity of “the lion dance on stilts”, turning it into a more interesting and popular martial art.
Fancy seeing “Bollywood” dance? Well, one of the oldest dances in the world is the Indian dance. The Indian dance is very much an integral part of worship and prayers in temples and practised by devotees who spent their entire life in the temple. As time has changed, the Indian dance does not just confine to the temple and has become part of the Indian community lifestyle. In Malaysia, the popular classical Indian dances are Odissi and Bharata Natyam.
Datuk Ramli Ibrahim became the first Malaysian to be awarded the coveted Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2011, the highest national honour conferred on performing artists, gurus and scholars of the performing arts. He received the award from the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee for his contributions to Odissi, the oldest surviving Indian dance form.
Folk dance is very much alive in East Malaysia which consists of the states of Sabah and Sarawak. With many indigenous groups, such as Iban, Kenyah, Bidayuh, Kadazan, Bajau and Murut, you will be amazed by the diverse range of dances which are as old as the existence of the tribes! The movement vocabulary of most folk dances is quite simple and the dance phrases and sequences are often repeated. Most depict nature, such as the Sumazau dance, which captures the movements of farmer chasing birds away from his paddy crops.
Besides feasting your eyes on the dance moves, be amazed by the elaborate beautiful costumes of the dancers which are very ornate, with majestic headgear and other accessories such as beads, chains, coins that define the origin of the tribes.

Dances of Malaysia
Dancing is part of the activities of Malaysians. While some dance for good health, others dance as a religious obligation, wedding reception, official functions and of course, fun! From a cultural perspective, dance characterises each ethnic group. It projects the rich customs and culture of the community and is varied geographically and culturally from one community to another.Let us start with the Malay dance.

Red Carpet Ready to Be Rolled for Cinefest Oz
CinéfestOZ, the Australian and French film festival held in Western Australia's South West in August is gearing up to welcome filmmakers, stars and diverse audiences to enjoy film screenings and events in centres around the region.
Held annually, CinéfestOZ screens the latest and best of Australian and French feature films, short films and documentaries, and celebrates the historic connection and French influences in the South West region of Western Australia with a rich program of events.
Boosted by the introduction in 2014 of the CinéfestOZ Film Prize, a $100,000 award for an Australian feature film, the festival is expected to attract the highest calibre of Australian filmmakers and stars in the festival's history.
CinéfestOZ CEO Malinda Nixon said the Film Prize, made possible through Tourism WA's Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions, will reward excellence in Australian filmmaking and draw international attention to Australian films and the region.
“The introduction of the Film Prize will deliver a premier showcase of new Australian feature films at the film festival, enticing people from all over the country to enjoy them all in this beautiful place.
“The Prize is about recognizing great Australian film and people who work to bring these films to our screens. For the CinéfestOZ film festival, it is equally about continuing to build the integrity of the festival and being an internationally influential film festival,” Ms Nixon said.
To add to the festival's kudos, acclaimed Australian actor Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) will be walking the red carpet at this year's festival for the Western Australian premiere of his psychological thriller 'Felony', which is one of six films in the running for the inaugural film prize.
CinéfestOZ is also delighted to announce the members of the jury: actress Marta Dusseldorp (A Place to Call Home, Janet King), film selector Benjamin Illos, producer Sue Milliken and film reviewer Margaret Pomeranz, along with jury chair, acclaimed Australian director Bruce Beresford, have been invited to decide the winner.
Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association's (AMRTA) Chief Executive Officer Pip Close said that the AMRTA was proud to be a sponsor of what was set to be a truly sensational event on the South West's cultural calendar.
“We are delighted to welcome such esteemed members of the film industry to our region for CinéfestOZ,” said Ms Close.
“From a tourism perspective, what's great is that this event is not just for film buffs – it's a fantastic way to explore our beautiful region, with pop-up events held in local cinemas, wineries, small bars and galleries - from Margaret River to Busselton, Augusta, Bunbury, Dunsborough and surrounds,” she said.
CinéfestOZ runs from August 20 – 24. The full CinéfestOZ film and event program and ticket sales go online on 1st August.

SNOWY MOUNTAINS TO HOST OCEANIA CROSS TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS
The NSW Government, via its tourism and major events agency Destination
NSW, has secured the Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships and the
Australian National Cross Triathlon Championships to be held in the
Snowy Mountains in 2015 and 2016.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Andrew Stoner, said the Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships will be held in an Australian-first next year, and the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships in February 2016.
“The Snowy Mountains’ growing reputation as a summer recreation and adventure sporting destination makes it the perfect fit for these events. Cross triathlon takes the traditional triathlon format off road, with competitors tackling a combination of swimming, mountain biking and trail running,” Mr Stoner said.
“It is estimated that together, the Oceania and Australian National Championships will attract close to 3,000 visitors from outside the region over the next two years, generating in excess of $1.2 million in visitor expenditure for the local economy.
“The Oceania Championships next year will be coupled with a weekend multisport festival at the Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa in the Snowy Mountains, offering activities for all ages and levels of experience,” he said.
Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, said the Snowy Mountains boasts fantastic trails, challenging National Park tracks and spectacular scenery.
“Last year the CSIRO named adventure, lifestyle, extreme and alternative sports as one of the six megatrends that will shape the sports sector in coming years and the Snowy Mountains is well placed to capitalise on that,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Hosting the Oceania and Australian National Cross Triathlon Championship events is a fantastic opportunity to show that the Snowy Mountains is not just a great destination during winter – visitors will find mountain biking, cycling, trail running and other adventure sports on offer year-round.
“Attracting more people to the region during the low season by growing the Australian Cross Triathlon Championships into a world class event is fantastic for the local community and economy,” he said.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said the Snowy Mountains has plenty to offer those looking to relax.
“Visitors can enjoy fishing in pristine streams, exploring historic towns like Cooma, Nimmitabel and Tumbarumba or indulging at fantastic local bars, restaurants and cafes,” Ms Chipchase said.
“The Cross Triathlon Championship and Multisport Festival will give people an added incentive to visit this stunning region of NSW, and give them an opportunity to take in the beauty of the natural environment while competing in or watching a world class sporting event.”
The Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships is part of the national TreX Cross Triathlon Series and is sanctioned by the Oceania Triathlon Union and Triathlon Australia and is a qualifying round for the World Cross Triathlon Championships in 2015.
