Kuala Lumpur is greeting thousands of visitors from around the world to take part in the annual 1Malaysia International Shoe Festival 2012 (1MISF) which opened yesterday.. Over 100 local and international well-known shoe manufacturers will participate in the festival, which is taking place from 29 March - 01 April 2012 at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Appealing to all travellers with a passion for fashion, this year's event will be the biggest yet. Over 60,000 local and overseas guests are anticipated to visit the shoe exhibitions, and appreciate works from prominent designers hailing from Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Germany and many others. This year, Malaysia's Tourism Ambassador and shoe couturier Professor Dato' (Dr) Jimmy Choo OBE will also showcase a specially designed couture collection, themed after the Year of the Dragon.

Minister of Tourism Malaysia, YB Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen believes the event has built on Malaysia's established fashion credentials, and has further reaffirmed its status as one of the most exciting shopping destinations in the world.

"The popularity of this event has reflected the buoyant growth of the shoe industry in Malaysia,  and I am glad to acknowledge we are making a solid stride in establishing Malaysia as the 'Shoe City of Asia'", said Minister of Tourism Malaysia,  YB Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen.

The 1MISF series provides established and aspiring shoe makers with a platform to exhibit their designs to an international audience. Last year, 1MISF attracted over 55,000 visitors with total sales of RM6.2 million (approx. $AUD 1.91 million) recorded during the event. Of the total, more than 15 per cent of these transactions were made by international guests from countries including Australia, U.K., the Middle East, France, U.S.A., China, Taiwan, India, and Pakistan. 

In recent years, Malaysian-made shoes have become one of the must-buy items for tourists visiting Malaysia. Annual export sales of shoes to countries such as Singapore and Germany have now reached RM600 million (approx. $AUD185 million) while RM500 million (approx. $AUD 154 million) in sales is recorded domestically.

"The shoe industry in Malaysia has more than 100 years of history, evolving from a humble industry to its current status as a hub for internationally prominent brands, fashionable and stylish designs, and fine quality at competitive prices," said the President of the Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association, Mr. Tony Ting.

In addition to shoe exhibitions, attendees can take part in programmes and activities including a shoe painting competition, miniature shoe design competition and take in the glamour of a shoe fashion show.

Admission to 1MISF 2012 is free and open to trade visitors on 29 March 2012 from 10:30am to 6:30pm; and to both trade visitors and the public from 30 March to 1 April 2012 from 10:30am to 8:30pm.
