Vale Peter “Big Pete” O’Reilly: A Legacy in Ecotourism

Peter “Big Pete” O’Reilly
The Australian tourism industry has lost a true pioneer with the passing of Peter “Big Pete” O’Reilly on March 5, 2025. A towering figure in the field of ecotourism, his dedication to showcasing the beauty of Lamington National Park has left an indelible mark on generations of visitors and conservationists alike.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Nature and Hospitality

Big Pete, alongside his brother Vince, took on the management of O’Reilly’s Guesthouse in the early 1950s. With their wives, Karma and Lona, they nurtured and developed the business over the next four decades, ensuring that guests experienced the magic of the rainforest in a way that was both immersive and sustainable. His passion for nature and hospitality shaped O’Reilly’s into one of Australia’s most cherished eco-retreats.

A Champion of Ecotourism Innovation

Throughout his career, Big Pete remained steadfast in his mission to enhance visitor experiences while preserving the natural beauty of Lamington National Park. He continually sought innovations in ecotourism, ensuring that the guesthouse remained at the forefront of sustainable tourism. His efforts were formally recognised in 2001 when he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his outstanding contributions to the industry.

A Beloved Family Man

Beyond his professional achievements, Big Pete was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He and Karma raised four sons and a daughter, and he took immense pride in his ten grandchildren. After Karma’s passing, he found love again with Annette Walton, gaining another two sons and their families, who became an integral part of his life.

A Lasting Legacy

Big Pete’s impact on Australian tourism and conservation will endure for generations. His unwavering commitment to nature, his warm hospitality, and his drive for ecotourism excellence have set a benchmark for future custodians of Australia’s natural heritage.

Rest in peace, Big Pete. Your legacy will stand as tall as the rainforest you cherished.
