Don’t let the lack of a car hold you back from exploring some of the best bushwalks in New South Wales. With Sydney’s excellent public transport network, you can easily reach stunning hikes that offer peace, adventure, and incredible views. Lace up your boots, jump on a train, and start your journey to two more of the best hikes you can reach by public transport.

1. Great North Walk, Mount Ku-ring-gai to Berowra

Distance: 10km one way
Time: 3.5-4.5 hours
Difficulty: Grade 3. Some bushwalking experience recommended, short steep hills, many steps, and some obstacles on track.

Part of the famous Great North Walk, which stretches for over 250km from Sydney to Newcastle, this section through the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is perfect for a day trip. The walk takes you through dense bushland, where you’ll cross shallow creeks, spot ancient Aboriginal middens, and ascend to Naa Badu Lookout for sweeping views over the surrounding forest and waterways. It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Australian bush without straying too far from the city.

Getting there: Take the train from Sydney to Mount Ku-ring-gai Station, a quick hour-long journey, and follow the short walk to the start of the trail. The hike finishes right at Berowra Station, making it easy to catch the train back into the city.

2. Glenbrook Gorge Track

Distance: 3km return
Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
Difficulty: Grade 4. Some bushwalking experience recommended, rough track with many obstacles and steep steps.

For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, the Glenbrook Gorge Track offers a short but tough descent into one of the Blue Mountains’ most tranquil spots. This rocky, rugged track takes you along the creek bed, where you can rock hop, spot wildlife, and admire the century-old railway tunnel being overtaken by nature. If you're in the mood for a swim, you can continue further into the gorge or head to the nearby Jellybean Track for a dip in the popular swimming hole.

Getting there: Catch a train from Sydney to Glenbrook Station, about an hour away, then enjoy a 20-minute walk to the start of the track. The hike is short but tough, so be prepared for some challenging terrain.

With these two beautiful hikes easily accessible from Sydney by public transport, there’s no reason not to escape the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature. Whether you want to take on a challenging gorge or explore ancient bushland, these trails offer the perfect adventure just a train ride away.
