Thailand’s Tourism Communities Earn Global Sustainability Recognition

Thailand eco-friendly practices
Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism has reached new heights as three of its vibrant communities—Ban Tham Suea, Sapphaya, and Ban Mae Soon Noi—have earned international recognition for their eco-friendly practices. These communities, located in Phetchaburi, Chainat, and Chiang Mai respectively, have successfully passed the Green Destinations assessment, meeting the rigorous criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), which is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The achievement marks a significant milestone for Thailand’s community-based tourism sector, putting these rural areas on the global stage. The recognition is a testament to their dedication to sustainability, promoting environmental preservation while offering travelers authentic and meaningful experiences.

Ban Tham Suea and Sapphaya, two of the honored communities, have been awarded the prestigious Bronze Level Good Travel Seal (GTS) certification from the Green Destinations Foundation, a renowned international sustainability standard based in the Netherlands. This certification highlights their exceptional efforts in sustainable tourism management, focusing on conserving natural resources, promoting local culture, and improving the well-being of residents.

The Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Tourism, Mr. Chaturon Pakdeewanich, expressed pride in the accomplishment, noting that the department continues to support community-based tourism that showcases local lifestyles, traditions, and wisdom. “This form of tourism not only provides unique experiences for visitors but also creates jobs, boosts local economies, and promotes environmental stewardship,” he said.

Currently, over 160 communities across Thailand have been awarded the Community-Based Tourism Standard (CBT Thailand) certification, with Ban Tham Suea, Sapphaya, and Ban Mae Soon Noi standing out for their extraordinary dedication to sustainable tourism. By emphasizing eco-friendly practices, these communities are setting a positive example for others in the region and globally.

As travelers increasingly seek out destinations that prioritize sustainability, these Thai communities offer a model for how tourism can support both the environment and local communities. With international recognition now in hand, Ban Tham Suea, Sapphaya, and Ban Mae Soon Noi are not just preserving their natural beauty and culture—they are paving the way for a more sustainable future in tourism.
