Guys & Dolls opens on Sydney Harbour
A Night to Remember on Sydney Harbour

The highly anticipated production of Guys & Dolls has made its triumphant return to the stage, opening on 21 March to a full house and a resounding wave of applause that echoed across Sydney Harbour. This brand-new rendition of the Broadway classic has been brought to life at Mrs Macquaries Point, where it will be showcased for a strictly limited four-week season under the stars.

A glamorous crowd filled with excitement and anticipation gathered on the red carpet, eager to see the spectacle unfold. As they approached the dazzling overwater stage, they were treated to spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, a perfect backdrop for an evening of world-class entertainment.

A Stellar Cast and Unforgettable Performances

The night was a resounding success, with audiences captivated by the performances of the talented cast. Cody Simpson, who plays the suave Sky Masterson, commanded the stage with charm and charisma, while Annie Aitkin as Sarah Brown showcased her vocal brilliance, creating a perfect onstage chemistry. Bobby Fox, as Nathan Detroit, and Angelina Thomson as Miss Adelaide, also received enthusiastic applause for their captivating performances.

One of the evening’s standout moments came courtesy of Jason Arrow, who delivered an unforgettable rendition of "Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat" as Nice-Nicely Johnson. The crowd was swept away by his energetic performance, which had everyone tapping their feet and humming the tune long after the show ended.

A Fresh Take on a Timeless Classic

Directed by award-winning Shaun Rennie, this new production of Guys & Dolls brings a fresh energy to the beloved musical. The show features all-new orchestrations by Musical Director Guy Simpson, conducted live during the performance. The enhanced musical score infused the iconic songs with extra vitality, making the familiar tunes feel both modern and timeless.

The set design by Brian Thomson played a key role in creating a larger-than-life experience, with stunning visual elements unfolding throughout the show. A striking New York City yellow taxi, which served as a giant centrepiece, transformed seamlessly between various scenes, adding an element of surprise and spectacle.

A Historic First for the Opera Australia Orchestra

In a unique twist, the Opera Australia Orchestra was brought into the spotlight, leaving their usual subterranean pit and performing from a newly designed, fully enclosed sky-deck. This marked the first time in the event’s 14-year history that the orchestra was showcased above the stage, adding a new dimension to the experience for both performers and the audience.

The Magic of Broadway on Sydney Harbour

Choreographer Kelley Abbey’s dynamic and sparkling choreography brought a new level of excitement to the production, with some of Australia’s finest singers and dancers performing classic Broadway numbers such as "Take Back Your Mink" and "Luck Be a Lady." Lavishly costumed by Jennifer Irwin, the dancers’ moves added to the overall visual splendor of the performance, creating a truly magical evening.

A Timeless Favourite, Reimagined

Guys & Dolls continues to cement its place as one of the greatest musicals of all time. First premiering on Broadway in 1950, the show has since won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has been adapted into a 1955 Hollywood film starring Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando. Now, Sydney Harbour is the latest location to host this timeless tale, which proves just how enduring Guys & Dolls remains as a beloved classic in the world of musical theatre.
