Conventions and Hotel Bookings Drive Optimism
After struggling through the pandemic years, San Francisco’s tourism industry is showing signs of a strong recovery. A major contributor to this rebound is the city’s bustling convention calendar. According to Anna Marie Presutti, CEO of SF Travel, San Francisco will host over 35 conventions in 2025, marking a significant increase from previous years. This surge in events is expected to boost hotel occupancy rates, with more than 200,000 additional hotel rooms already booked for the year.
The influx of convention-goers is crucial for San Francisco’s economy, as the city’s hotel taxes are a significant source of revenue. With visitor spending estimated to reach around $10 billion in 2025, the city is on track to enjoy a much stronger year than 2024, when tourism was still recovering. SF Travel expects around 23 million visitors to flock to the city, signaling a welcome return to form for the tourism industry.
A Changing Perception of the City
As the city welcomes more visitors, local businesses are seeing the benefits of the tourism revival. At The Buena Vista Café, known for its world-famous Irish Coffees, bartender John Jeide is anticipating another busy year. Having already made millions of Irish Coffees over the years, Jeide is excited to add even more to the tally in 2025.
"These last few weeks, we've been really crazy busy," he said. "I think 2025 will be a big year for us."
This shift in momentum is also reflected in the changing perception of San Francisco. Visitors, like a recent tourist from Iowa, are sharing positive feedback, impressed by the city's charm and vibrancy. For many, the experience of the city has exceeded expectations, highlighting the improvements and revitalization taking place.

With high-profile events, such as the NBA All-Star Game in February, already on the calendar, San Francisco is committed to showcasing its best side.
