| Construction to Begin on Major Domestic Terminal Overhaul |
In a move set to transform air travel for millions of passengers, Sydney Airport has announced an ambitious $200 million upgrade to its T2 domestic terminal. Construction is slated to begin on 1 May 2025, with a clear goal in mind: reducing the time it takes for passengers to move from kerb to gate to just 15 minutes.
Enhancing the Passenger Journey
The highly anticipated upgrades, which were first unveiled in November 2024, promise to streamline and modernize every step of the passenger experience. By introducing cutting-edge technology, Sydney Airport aims to significantly reduce wait times, making air travel smoother, faster, and more efficient for the 17 million passengers who pass through the terminal each year.
This overhaul marks the first major renovation in over three decades at Australia’s busiest domestic terminal. It includes new self-service check-in kiosks, advanced bag drop systems, and next-generation security features that will improve the overall journey from arrival to boarding. With plans to enhance check-in processes and significantly speed up security screening, Sydney Airport is setting the stage for a seamless travel experience.
Streamlined Check-In and Faster Security
One of the key components of the T2 upgrade is the introduction of self-service kiosks and automated bag drop systems. These innovations are expected to increase baggage processing rates by 300 bags per hour, easing one of the most common bottlenecks at airports. Security will also see major improvements with the introduction of state-of-the-art scanners, which allow passengers to leave laptops and aerosols in their carry-on luggage. This upgrade will nearly double the capacity of each security lane, from 235 to 500 passengers per hour, vastly improving the flow of people through the terminal.
Improved Accessibility and Convenience
The renovations will also make T2 more accessible for all passengers. New dedicated security lanes for family and assistance travelers will ensure smoother transitions for those who need extra help. Additional lifts post-security will provide better access to food courts and lounges, making it easier for passengers to navigate the terminal after passing through security.
Phased Construction and Temporary Changes
While the upgrades will significantly improve the passenger experience, the construction process will be phased over several years. Security upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, while check-in renovations will wrap up in late 2026. This means that passengers traveling through T2 in the coming months will experience some changes in their airport routine.
To accommodate construction, passengers traveling with Rex Airlines and Fly Pelican will need to depart from the T3 domestic terminal starting 8 April 2025. Additionally, Jetstar’s check-in facilities will be temporarily relocated by 28 April 2025 to share space with Virgin Australia.
A New Era for T2
Once complete, the T2 domestic terminal will boast modernized check-in halls, an increase in baggage capacity, and a streamlined security process that will allow passengers to breeze through the terminal more efficiently than ever before. By 2026, T2 will be capable of processing up to 1,800 bags per hour, a significant increase from the current rate of 1,500.
Scott Charlton, CEO of Sydney Airport, explained the significance of these upgrades: “We’re committed to improving the experience for the 17 million passengers who use T2 every year. Our goal is to get passengers from kerb to gate in just 15 minutes, and these upgrades will help us achieve that.”
T2’s Vital Role at Sydney Airport
Built in the 1990s, T2 was originally designed to accommodate 8 million passengers. Today, it serves more than 17 million passengers annually and houses major carriers like Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and regional airlines. In fact, if T2 were a standalone airport, it would be the fourth largest in Australia.
As Sydney Airport continues to grow and evolve, the $200 million T2 upgrade will ensure the terminal remains a key hub for domestic air travel in the years to come.
