Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre Expands Accessibility with New Changing Places Facility

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
In a significant step towards greater inclusivity and accessibility, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) has unveiled its new Changing Places facility to coincide with Physical Disability Awareness Day. Designed to support visitors with high support needs, this state-of-the-art space ensures that all guests can participate in the vibrant events and exhibitions hosted at MCEC.

A Thoughtfully Designed Inclusive Space

Developed in collaboration with Folk Architects, the facility was made possible through a Changing Places Grant from the Victorian Government. It integrates feedback from community members with lived experience, ensuring the space meets the needs of people with disabilities.

Key features include:

  • Height-adjustable adult changing table for flexibility and comfort.
  • Ceiling track hoist system for safe and convenient transfers.
  • Centrally located peninsula toilet for easy access.
  • Bespoke seating for carers, enhancing comfort and usability.
  • Warm materials, inviting textures, and soft lighting to create a welcoming environment.

By incorporating Universal Design principles, MCEC has gone beyond basic compliance to create a functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing space for all users.

Strategically Located for Maximum Accessibility

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
The Changing Places facility is centrally located within MCEC’s precinct, ensuring convenience for guests attending major events. Positioned near the Plenary Theatre, Goldfields Café, and Exhibition Centre car park, the facility provides easy access for visitors with disabilities and their support networks.

In addition, MCEC has also upgraded its Parents’ Room, continuing the warm, inclusive, and accessible design approach across multiple spaces in the venue.

Empowering Inclusion at Major Events

The new facility will enable people with profound or multiple disabilities to fully engage with MCEC’s diverse event calendar, including:
  • Melbourne Disability Expo
  • Disability Connections Expo
  • Source Kids Disability Expo
  • Variety Kids Christmas Party

These events attract large numbers of attendees with disabilities, their families, and support workers. The Changing Places facility ensures that all visitors can enjoy these experiences with dignity and ease.

A Key Milestone in MCEC’s Accessibility Action Plan

The launch of the Changing Places facility is a significant achievement within the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust’s Accessibility Action Plan, which was introduced earlier this year.
Industry and Government Leaders Applaud the Initiative

Minister for Disability, Lizzie Blandthorn:

“This facility cements Victoria’s reputation as a state that prioritises inclusion and accessibility, removing barriers for thousands in the community.”

MCEC Chief Executive, Natalie O’Brien AM:

“As an iconic venue, MCEC is committed to creating inclusive spaces, enabling everyone to engage in events that provide social and economic value.”

Tim Wilson, Director of Folk Architects:

“Not only will this encourage broader participation in MCEC events, but it sends a message that people with disabilities, their families, and support networks are valued members of society.”

Setting the Standard for Inclusive Public Spaces

By investing in high-quality, accessible infrastructure, MCEC is leading the way in ensuring events and experiences are welcoming to all. As Melbourne’s premier event venue, MCEC’s commitment to inclusion and accessibility is helping make the city a more equitable destination for both residents and visitors.
