The Duke of Wellington, Apsley House, London

Apsley House, London
After defeating Napoleon at Waterloo the life and legacy of the 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) endures.

And yet there remains aspects of Arthur Wellesley’s life that are less well known.

Apsley House, which was Wellington’s London home, will reveal new insights into the man during 2024 and 2025.

From 27 March 2024, visitors will be able to view five of Wellington’s military dress uniforms in the opulent setting of the Striped Drawing Room, three of which have never been on public display before.

The basement gallery will house more objects and items belonging to the 1st Duke including a writing set he used in the field, along with battle orders from 1815, a telescope he used to survey battlegrounds, and a pair of handmade boots that would become synonymous with his name, Wellington.

In 2025, Apsley House stage a major rehang of Wellington’s collection of Dutch paintings and will highlight Wellington’s love of art and collecting.

Apsley House, a townhouse at 149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner, was purchased in 1816 by the 1st Duke of Wellington after his victory at Waterloo and became known as ‘Number 1 London’.

The house reflects the style of the 1820s when it was remodelled for Wellington by his architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt, and holds an important collection of fine art, alongside an outstanding display of porcelain and silver.
