About Odaiba: Set on Tokyo Bay looking back at Tokyo's skyline and the Rainbow Bridge, once upon a time, this area was a series of small man-made fort islands, hence the name daiba which means fort. Built back in the Edo period to protect Tokyo from possible attacks, eventually the islands were joined by landfill and developed into a futuristic cityscape from the 1980s. In the late 1990s a monorail link, the development of hotels and attractions turned the district into a popular place for locals on weekends and a tourist attraction.
