Montenegro in Winter

Montenegro in Winter
The small Balkan country of Montenegro has rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along the Adriatic.

The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi.

The Durmitor National Park, home to bears and wolves, has limestone peaks, glacial lakes and the Tara River Canyon.

Montenegro offers a range of winter sports activities -

Skiing in the Montenegrin mountains

Montenegro is a relatively undiscovered ski destination in the Balkans. With 45 km of ski trails for easy and intermediate skiers, Kolašin is the largest and most modern winter sports resort in Montenegro. Kolašin 1600 and Kolašin 1450 offer ski trails via a six-seater cable car and, following recent updates and improvements, the resort extends to an altitude of over 2,000 metres, which helps to ensure reliable snow conditions.

Winter Hiking

Winter hiking can be challenging, but the stillness of Montenegro when blanketed in snow makes the effort a good option. Montenegro has five national parks covering 10 percent of the country’s territory with the Durmitor National Park offering hiking trails and ski resorts from December to March.

Snowshoe in Durmitor National Park

Montenegro’s mountains provide opportunities for snowshoeing, allowing travellers a way to discover the Balkan destination in winter. Snowshoes can be rented from the Durmitor National Park and Prokletije National Park visitor centres, with marked trail leading from the Black Lake to the Ski Center Savin Kuk.

Winter Rafting

Montenegro in Winter
There is the chance to go winter rafting on the Tara river on the Balkan Peninsula, as well as the longest Montenegrin river and Europe's deepest canyon. Igalo With over 70 years of tradition and 70 different therapies, Simo Milošević in Igalo is Montenegro's largest spa, offering wellness services in addition to modern rehabilitation therapies.
