Kusatsu Onsen is renowned for its natural hot spring water that can reach temperatures as high as 90°C, and as adding cold water to cool it down will also dilute the hot spring water and lessen its rejuvenating properties, the locals used to stir, beat, and splash the water with a long wooden paddle to reduce the temperature. This tradition is called Yumomi.
You can often see Yumomi performed by locals at various hot springs, but at Osayu, you can also watch a Yumomi show put on by cute monkeys! In addition, on the second floor, you can see capybaras soaking in the hot spring (depending on their mood) and also adorable baby monkeys.
All the animals are lovingly cared for and have their own distinct personalities! It is definitely an interesting experience if you visit both Yumomi shows by the locals and the cute monkeys from Osayu!
