The official flag raising ceremony at Brisbane International Cruise Terminal was jointly hosted by Captain Adriano Binacchi and Carnival Cruise Line VP Kara Glamore. Carnival Luminosa officers Maria Avendano and Pietro Battilana led the inaugural flag raising at the bow of the ship to close the ceremony.
The Flag of FUN, a symbol of Carnival’s commitment to Queensland, features photos submitted by Queenslanders, showcasing how they ‘Choose FUN’ in their home state. The design of the flag’s shapes is also representative of the state of Queensland. The maroon triangle speaks to the state’s official colour, whilst the Carnival blue waves echo the shapes of Queensland’s world-famous shoreline. The yellow circle represents the sun for which the state gets its nickname, the Sunshine State as well as the renowned sunsets and sunrises seen onboard a CarnivalGuests of the ceremony included local travel agents, media and representatives from Carnival Cruise Line partners including the Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation, Brisbane Bullets and Tangalooma Island Resort, as well as Brisbane Airport, Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Economic Development Agency. Attendees were invited to join a special 3-course ‘Carnival Favourites’ lunch in the Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, including the famous lobster surf and turf and the fan-favourite chocolate melting cake. The lunch also featured surprise entertainment from Carnival’s iconic dancing waiters and singing Maître D’.
Following the lunch, guests enjoyed a tour of Carnival Luminosa’s ship highlights including the 10-deck high atrium and bronze Fernando Botero sculpture, Sunset Bar and pools, and expansive spa and thermal area – one of the largest in the global fleet. They also had a chance to check out the on-board dining and bar options including Vela Restaurant, Alchemy Bar, Red Frog Rum Bar and Pizzeria del Capitano, as well as Australian Luminosa-exclusive options including Bonsai Sushi Express and the Taco and Burrito Bar.
“The Flag of FUN acts as a physical representation of Carnival Cruise Line’s commitment to Queensland,” said Kara Glamore, Carnival Cruise Line VP. “Throughout Luminosa’s season, cruisers can look to the flag that they helped us create and see themselves reflected in it. Queenslanders show us a lot of love and we wanted to return the favour by sailing with a beautiful symbol of the state and its people onboard our Brisbane-based ship.”
Carnival Luminosa is expected to carry over 70,000 guests on board 31 cruises while homeported in Brisbane until April 2024, sailing to iconic domestic and international ports of call including Airlie Beach, the Great Barrier Reef and South Pacific destinations such as New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.
Carnival is dedicated to supporting Queensland, cementing this commitment through local partnerships in the state. For the next two years, Carnival has come on board as Premier Partner of the Brisbane Bullets, a sporting organisation that has been an integral part of the Queensland community for over 44 years. In addition to a dedicated ‘Fun Zone’ for kids at the Bullets’ home stadium, Carnival will support regional community clinics across the state.
Since 2019, Carnival has also supported the Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation through its onboard ‘Conga for Kids’ events. On every sailing out of Brisbane, the event raises funds to support Queensland children and their families, with Luminosa’s first Australian season raising over $35,000.
The ship’s presence in Queensland’s capital this season is projected to inject approximately $30 million into the local economy.
