Bento boxed lunch

Bento, which translates to boxed lunch or home-packed meal, is a part of Japanese culture that many people are familiar with and enjoy. Bentos such as train bento and convenience store bento can be found all throughout Japan! Akita Prefecture is home to a traditional craft known as Odate Magewappa, that produces bento boxes and other tableware out of natural Akita cedar.

At Wappa Building, you can learn more about the craft of Magewappa and its connection to preparing a great bento. The facility consists of three main elements: tradition, food, and interaction. Learn about the history and uses of Magewappa, taste seasonal sweets, and chat with locals or other visitors! One of the unique sweets you can find at the in-house cafe, "S.witch cafe", is the Magewappa Tiramisu. You can also bring home some of the Magewappa crafts from the shop!
