Lumiere light art biennial in Durham U.K.

Lumiere
16 to 19 November 2023
Lumiere is the UK’s light art biennial produced by leading arts producers, Artichoke and commissioned by Durham County Council with funding from Arts Council England.

The 2023 Lumiere will run from 16 to 19 November and feature over 40 installations positioned across Durham.

Each evening from 16:30 to 23:00 the medieval city will become a nocturnal art experience hosting works made with light on its streets, bridges, buildings and river. Work will be set up in spots including the Market Place, Durham Cathedral’s UNESCO World Heritage site, Bishop Auckland town centre and the Durham University campus.

A highlight of the biennial for the last fourteen years has been the artistic interaction with Durham’s Norman Cathedral, and this year will see its most spectacular transformation yet.

Fourteen years after Lumiere debuted in Durham it now attracts artists from 15 different countries exhibiting their artwork free for the public.

Installations in 2023 include 16 new commissions and seven UK debuts, ranging from local North East artists and global light art artists.
