Bikepacking in the UK Lake District

Bikepacking in the Lake District, by Ed Hunton, is a new Cicerone guidebook to eight challenging bike rides in the Lake District National Park.

Bikepacking is the off-road equivalent of cycle touring wild camping or staying in the usual accommodation options.

It offers cyclists the opportunity to immerse themselves in the environment and explore the on two wheels.

The two to five-day rides are suitable for mountain bikes and cover road climbs such as Hardknott, Wrynose, Whinlatter and Honister.

Off road routes include Sticks Pass, Stake Pass and Black Sail; and England's highest bridleway over Helvellyn.

All routes are accessible by public transport and showcase the best of Lakeland's roads, tracks, lanes and bridleways.

The guide contains clear route descriptions, planning tables and elevation profiles with routes graded.

The Lake District national park in Cumbria, northwest England, is known for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and historic literary associations.

Market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on scenic Derwentwater are also bases for exploring the area and home to traditional inns, galleries of local art and outdoor equipment shops.
