Every year from late August to October giant straw sculptures, up to 5-metres tall, emerge at Uwasekigata Park in Niigata Prefecture for the Wara Art Festival.
Niigata is one of Japan's top locations for rice cultivation and the rice straw, a byproduct of the harvest, is gathered and moulded into curious creatures by students of the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and local volunteers using traditional weaving techniques.
There are also live performances and pop-up stalls making it an event the whole family will enjoy!
