Beaches in the Algarve

Portimão
The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts.

Whitewashed fishing villages overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed. The Algarve also has some of Europe’s finest beaches.

Portimão

Located at Europe’s far south-western tip, close to where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean meet, Portimão enjoys 300 days of sunshine each year, a temperate climate and around 8km of some of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches.

Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha, the 'beach of rocks’ is Portimão’s most popular beach and one of the oldest resort areas in the country and has over a mile of golden sand. The ‘rocks’ in the name refers to the limestone cliffs that tower behind the main beach, which is a 1.5km walk from Portimão. This town has been welcoming visitors since the 1930s and today offers clubs and bars that continue late into the night.

Praia do Alvor

Alvor offers a single vast stretch of golden sand that extends out over 3.5km from the mouth of the Ria de Alvor to the sandstone cliffs of Prainha. It offers a quieter and more secluded alternative to the Praia da Rocha and it is just a short walk to Alvor’s harbour village, with its traditional white-washed houses and cobbled streets. The beach itself remains largely undeveloped, with just a handful of beach bars, restaurants and footpaths dotting the sand.
