Aviation access continues to open up

With strong demand for domestic travel as well as international arrivals beginning to increase, airports and destinations right around the state are welcoming continual increases in flight schedules.

One of Tropical North Queensland’s favourite airlines landed back in Cairns last week, bringing a welcome influx of visitors timed perfectly for the winter peak. Air New Zealand will now operate three direct flights between Auckland and Cairns each week.

Air New Zealand also recommenced direct flights between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast on the weekend, with a twice-weekly service providing more than 8,000 seats between the two destinations.

Another new post-pandemic record was also set at Brisbane’s International Airport over the weekend with an estimated 10,500 passengers passing through the terminal on Sunday, while Monday marked Brisbane Airport's busiest day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 65,000 travellers passing through the domestic and international terminals. The most popular domestic destinations were Cairns, Townsville and the Whitsundays.

Meantime, the Gold Coast Airport is calling on volunteers from the Gold Coast to sign up for their new terminal expansion mass trial event in late August.
