WARRUMBUNGLES DECLARED AUSTRALIA’S FIRST ‘DARK SKY PARK’

One of NSW's most popular national parks and heritage attractions, the Warrumbungle National Park, has been declared Australia’s first Dark Sky Park in recognition of its wondrous night sky and important role in astronomy.

The Park’s new status is a welcome addition to the State’s tourism offerings, highlighting the significance of NSW National Parks internationally.

The declaration has been bestowed by the International Dark Sky Association – an organisation that works to help stop light pollution and protect night skies for future generations. The Warrumbungle region has long been famous for its clear starry skies and is a renowned attraction for stargazing.

NSW Minister for Planning Rob Stokes said the Park’s dark sky qualities will be protected with $100,000 in funding to control light pollution.

Warrumbungle National Park joins other international Dark Sky Parks including Death Valley National Park in the United States and Galloway Forest Park in Scotland.
