The Tourism Research Australia (TRA) has released the latest
results from the International Visitor Survey (IVS) and the National Visitor
Survey (NVS) reporting on the year ended March 2012.
The International Visitor Survey, released on 6 June 2012,
showed that international visitors to NSW are staying longer and spending more.
International visitors spent more than 67 million nights in NSW, which was an
increase of over 4 per cent. Overnight expenditure also increased with visitors
spending $6.2 billion in the state.
The National Visitor Survey, released on 31 June 2012,
showed that total visitor nights in the State increased by 3.5 per cent on Year
Ending March 2011, bringing the total nights to nearly 83.6 million. Regional
NSW was the largest source market in terms of nights in the State (37.1 per
cent), followed by Sydney (24.1 per cent) and Queensland (14.2 per
cent).
Further highlights from the International Visitor Survey
show that holidaying visitors increased from India
(up 25 per cent), China (up
23 per cent), Thailand (up
13 per cent) and Indonesia
and Taiwan
(both up 9 per cent). While Malaysian holiday visitors to NSW reached the
highest level since the Sydney Olympics with an increase of 25 per cent. While
for regional NSW, International visitor numbers increased to the New England
North West, The Murray and Capital Country.
The National Visitor Survey showed that NSW received over 24
million domestic overnight visitors which was an increase of 1.1 per cent
compared to March 2011. This increase was largely driven by the increase in
business travellers (up 12.3 per cent).
Visitor expenditure to NSW increased by 5.7 per cent
compared to March 2011, with domestic overnight visitors spending $14.2 billion
in the State. On average, visitors spent $169 per night which is an increase of
1.8 per cent on Year Ending March 2011.
