Cairns CBD the Centre of Cairns Festival 2012

Cairns Festival 2012 events are staged at various places throughout the City of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland Australia. The Central Business District (CBD) is the place to be for the following events.

CIAF Exhibition
Artistic Director Avril Quaill curates the CIAF Exhibition entitled, “Where the art leads: new explorations by Queensland Indigenous artists.” The exhibition presents new works by Queensland Indigenous artists exploring innovations in art forms and presents key works produced in the past twelve months. Works include exciting new projects that focus on sculpture, the fibre arts, and performing art, along side new works created in the conventional mediums of painting, printmaking and drawing.

InkMasters Print Projections
New images of printmakers at work will be projected each evening during the Cairns Festival. Still and moving images made by Nicole Wüst during an Inkmasters residency in Cairns and Torres Strait Islands show artists in their working environments.

Jazz and Jam

Consecrate - The Venerable or Revered
crate59 is a not-for-profit, artist run, contemporary studio/gallery space at 59 Sheridan St, Cairns. It is dedicated to supporting young and emerging artists as well as established artists, by providing a space for production, presentation and creative networking. The site houses 11 permanent artist studios, the crate59 gallery and Billy’s Coffee.

Sub-150 - The Affordable Art Show
Knock Knock Contemporary Artists’ Initiative presents an exciting exhibition offering a gallery full of artworks at affordable prices. SUB-150 features more than 25 local artists with paintings, prints and sculptural works on display. An Artists’ Forum is also scheduled for Fri 31 August from 6.00pm.

Mays: The May Lane St Art Program
Adam Hill
Mays: The May Lane Street Art Project is the first comprehensive exhibition of street art to tour nationally. Including work by: Adam Hill, B.U.G.A.U.P., Chor Boogie (USA), Deb, Die Laughing Collective, Dlux!, Dmote, Cultural Urge, Jumbo, Kenji Nakayama (USA/Japan), Kamion (UK), Luna, Mare, Mini Graff, Nails, Numskull, Otis, Peque (Mexico), Peru, Peter Burgess, Phibs, Scram, Spice, Taring Padi Collective (Indonesia), Zap and Zombe.

The Bower People

Movies that matter - Bag it
What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb Berrier looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society-from baby bottles, to sports equipment, to dental sealants, to personal care products-is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it.

Ensembles, Arias and Pipe Organ
Cairns Classical Music Group has been presenting live classical music concerts in the Cairns area for over fifty years. Ensembles, Arias and Pipe Organ concert will showcase choirs, instrumental ensembles, and solo arias. Organ items will be played on Cairns Presbyterian Church’s Spuren and Rutt pipe organ, the only pipe organ in Far North Queensland. Concert compiled and compered by David Godwin.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Renowned archeologist and expert in the occult, Dr. Indiana Jones, is hired by the U.S. Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to still hold the ten commandments. Unfortunately, agents of Hitler are also after the Ark. Indy, and his ex-flame Marion, escape from various close scrapes in a quest that takes them from Nepal to Cairo.
