The BHP Steel Works closed down in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, 13 years ago. They were the largest employer of people in “The City of Steel” since the opening of the original steel works in 1915 to their closure in 1999. The site was chosen due to the large coal deposits in the Hunter Region and the excellent port facilities at the mouth of the Hunter River. More than 50,000 people were employed during its 84 years of operation.
In September 2012 it will be 13 years since the closure of the BHP Newcastle Bar Mill Front End in Newcastle. To keep in touch with the "Men and Women of Steel" a reunion will be held on Saturday September 22 2012 at the Newcastle District Tennis Club. Employees from 1915 to 1999 are invited to attend the Reunion, for which there is fee entry and is being organised by the Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association.
