Thailand Launches Green Tourism Collections to Drive Sustainable Travel and Meet EU Standards

Thailand Green Tourism Collections
New Sustainable Routes Across 10 Green Cities Lead the Way

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has unveiled the Thailand Green Tourism Collections, an ambitious initiative featuring 20 sustainable travel routes across 10 designated Green Cities. This flagship programme aligns with Thailand’s 2030 Sustainable Tourism Goals and the visionary New Thailand 2026 strategy, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to environmentally responsible tourism.

Meeting Evolving European Union Sustainability Regulations

Developed in close collaboration with EU tour operators and Thai public-private partners, the Green Tourism Collections prepare Thailand’s tourism sector for the European Union’s stringent sustainability rules, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). These regulations require EU companies to work only with suppliers who demonstrate transparent, measurable sustainability performance—giving Thai operators a crucial competitive advantage in global markets.

Seven Categories of Sustainable Experiences

The Collections showcase certified operators excelling in seven key sustainability categories: Green Accommodations, Attractions, Activities, Restaurants, Goods, Logistics, and Tour Operators. Each participant meets international benchmarks such as Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), Green Globe, or Green Destinations certifications, alongside national recognitions including the Thailand Tourism Awards and TAT’s STGs STAR and CF-Hotels programs.

Exploring Thailand’s 10 Green Cities

The selected Green Cities include Chiang Mai, Nan, Sukhothai, Loei, Nakhon Ratchasima, Bangkok, Trat, Krabi, Phang-Nga, and Surat Thani. These destinations were chosen with insights from 26 regional and global travel platforms and partners renowned for sustainability expertise. The 20 curated routes focus on cultural heritage, local cuisine, soft adventure, sustainable luxury, crafts, and community-based tourism, reflecting TAT’s “5 Must Do in Thailand” strategy.

Empowering Communities with the Green Mayor Initiative

To foster local ownership, TAT launched the Green Mayor programme in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. This initiative integrates sustainability at the municipal level through route development, community engagement, and destination branding. Chom Thong District’s Green Mayor, Mr. Natthapong Meepokakij, describes it as an opportunity to protect the environment, celebrate heritage, and boost local incomes sustainably.

Bringing Green Tourism to Life

The official launch event at Phumjai Garden featured a panel with Green Mayors and an immersive journey along Bangkok’s eco-friendly routes. Visitors explored Bang Khun Thian canal by electric boat, toured historic orchards, visited Khlong Bang Luang Artist House, and witnessed sustainable farming at Uncle Ree’s Farm.

Building Global Momentum for Sustainable Tourism

TAT is actively promoting the Green Tourism Collections through online presentations, product showcases, and familiarisation trips for agents and media worldwide. Strategic campaigns targeting the EU and US markets will leverage key opinion leaders, influencers, and bloggers to amplify Thailand’s sustainability message. The Collections will be officially introduced at WTM London 2025, cementing Thailand’s role as a leader in sustainable travel.

Mrs. Chiravadee Khunsub, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing, emphasises: “Green tourism is a national commitment. Through collaboration, we are turning sustainability into a scalable reality and positioning Thailand as a premier sustainable tourism destination.”
