National Consultation Workshop to Guide Tourism Growth
Sri Lanka has taken a decisive step towards shaping its tourism future with the launch of the National Consultation Workshop for the Tourism Strategic Plan 2026–2030. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism, the event brought together representatives from all nine provinces and 25 districts to build a unified vision for the industry’s growth. The new strategy follows the conclusion of the 2023–2025 Tourism Strategic Plan and is set to align with national development goals, the revised Tourism Policy, and key international frameworks. It aims to deliver a forward-looking roadmap that supports sustainability, inclusivity, and competitiveness on the global stage.
Building on Evidence and Stakeholder Input
The Ministry has emphasized that the new Strategic Plan will be evidence-based, ensuring that development priorities reflect both sector realities and local needs. Key elements of the process include:- Tourism asset mapping across regions
- Capacity and skills assessments
- Comprehensive situational analysis
- Strong stakeholder participation
A particular focus will be placed on nature-based tourism, community-led initiatives, and micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) development. By diversifying tourism products and spreading benefits equitably, the strategy aims to strengthen regional economies and uplift communities across the island.
Collaboration Across the Tourism Ecosystem
Over the next three to six months, the Ministry of Tourism will work closely with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM), and Lead Consultant Dr. Samantha Pathirathna. Input will also be drawn from hoteliers, travel agents, tour guides, academia, and provincial authorities. This inclusive approach ensures that the Strategic Plan is not only visionary but also grounded in the realities of Sri Lanka’s diverse regions and tourism stakeholders.
International Support for Sri Lanka’s Tourism Revival
The National Consultation Workshop has also highlighted the importance of global partnerships. Visa Global Company’s sponsorship of workshop logistics demonstrates the strong international interest in Sri Lanka’s tourism revival. The Ministry has encouraged further private sector contributions, especially in provincial-level planning and development.Guided by Hon. Minister Vijitha Herath and Hon. Deputy Minister Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe, the process will remain aligned with national priorities while embracing sustainability and innovation. A final validation phase will ensure transparency, stakeholder confidence, and shared ownership of the plan.
Inaugural Workshop at Galle Face Hotel
The inaugural consultation workshop took place at the iconic Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. The event saw participation from the Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, the Deputy Ministry Secretary, Senior Assistant Secretary Mr. Russel Aponsu, along with representatives from both the public and private sectors. This marks the beginning of a nationwide effort to shape a tourism strategy that will secure Sri Lanka’s place as a sustainable and competitive global destination.
