A Bold New Travel Incentive

Thailand is planning an ambitious campaign to draw more international visitors by giving away free domestic flights. The program, titled “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights,” aims to provide 200,000 complimentary round-trip tickets for tourists arriving in the country over the next three months.

Backed by the Ministry of Tourism, the scheme is expected to run from September to November, pending cabinet approval. Travellers booking international flights directly through airlines or travel agencies will be eligible for the promotion.

How the Free Flights Will Work

The Thai government will subsidise up to THB 1,750 (€40) for a one-way ticket or THB 3,500 (€80) for a round-trip journey. Each ticket will also include 20kg of checked baggage, making it easier for visitors to explore multiple regions within the country.

Six airlines are already on board with the program, including Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Vietjet. Officials hope the campaign will generate THB 8.8 billion (€200 million) in revenue from a budget of THB 700 million (€16 million).

There are some restrictions, however. Only tourists arriving by air are eligible, while those entering via land or sea will not qualify. Additionally, flights booked before the scheme launches will not count.

Encouraging Tourism Beyond Bangkok and Phuket

Thailand’s strategy is not just about boosting visitor numbers but also about encouraging travellers to explore beyond the country’s most popular destinations. While Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai remain major draws, the initiative seeks to highlight lesser-visited provinces.

These under-the-radar destinations offer rich cultural heritage, ancient temples, authentic culinary traditions, and unspoiled beaches. By distributing tourism more evenly, the campaign aims to support sustainable development while giving travellers new and unique experiences.

Thailand’s Tourism Challenges

The free-flight initiative comes as Thailand continues to face challenges in reviving its tourism industry. Once the country’s economic powerhouse, tourism has struggled to regain its pre-pandemic heights.

In 2019, nearly 40 million international visitors flocked to Thailand’s beaches, cities, and cultural landmarks. However, despite setting a goal of 39 million arrivals for 2025, the Bank of Thailand has lowered its forecast to 33 million.

So far, only 20.8 million arrivals have been recorded this year, representing a 7 per cent decline compared to the previous year. Negative headlines, including violent incidents in Bangkok and a border clash with Cambodia, have further impacted Thailand’s image as a safe and carefree destination.

Other Government Initiatives to Boost Tourism

Alongside the free-flight program, Thailand has introduced a series of measures designed to attract more visitors. These include delaying entry fees, easing visa restrictions for Chinese tourists, and offering digital nomad visas to appeal to remote workers.

The government has also floated proposals to develop casinos as part of broader efforts to enhance the country’s appeal. While these initiatives have drawn attention, the free domestic flight scheme stands out as one of the most innovative and immediate solutions to revitalising tourism.

What Travellers Should Know

While the idea of free flights across Thailand is appealing, tourists are advised to wait for official cabinet approval before making travel plans under this program. If implemented, the scheme will give international visitors the opportunity to explore Thailand more deeply and affordably, making it an ideal time to plan a holiday.
