Imagine zipping from Sydney to Melbourne in just two hours – door-to-door, no airports, no security queues, no check-in.

maglev train
New analysis from travelinsurance.com.au reveals how Japan’s maglev – the world’s fastest commercial train, capable of hitting 500km/h in just two and a half minutes – could slash travel times on Australia’s busiest routes.

The results show how dramatically it could reshape domestic tourism and even daily commutes.

How travel times could be slashed with maglev:Melbourne–Sydney:
  • 2 hours – same-day harbour visits become possible.
  • Sydney–Brisbane: 2 hrs 5 mins – weekend Gold Coast trips without the flight hassle.
  • Melbourne–Adelaide: 1 hr 42 mins – wine region day trips within reach.

Extended tourism experiences

For longer hauls, a Sydney to Perth journey would take just over seven hours, offering uninterrupted cross-country sightseeing that planes can’t match.

"Maglev technology could theoretically make multi-city Australian holidays as seamless as European rail travel, encouraging domestic tourism and longer stays in each destination," said Shaun McGowan, founder of travelinsurance.com.au.

The ultimate commuter route

Sydney to Canberra could become Australia’s ultimate commuter route, with the 287km trip taking just 50 minutes station-to-station. It would take about 1 hour 40 minutes door-to-door, similar to today’s suburban commutes from the Blue Mountains or Central Coast.

A fun but unlikely experiment

Of course, with Japan’s own maglev project tipped to cost $55 billion, it’s unlikely we’ll see this in Australia any time soon. But as a thought experiment, it shows how transformative high-speed rail could be for tourism, domestic travel, and even commutes.

"If you look at how much time you spend at the airport, including check-in, security, boarding, and waiting, if that total is more than the time difference for the top ten routes, then the train will ultimately be the faster option overall," McGowan said.
