Giong Festival: Sacred offerings revealed

The Bamboo Flower Tree procession
Centuries of legend, history, and cultural pride come alive at the Giong Festival, an annual celebration held in the outskirts of Hanoi in Vietnam. Taking place from the 6th to the 8th of the first lunar month, this vibrant festival draws visitors to Soc Temple, a Special National Monument, in Soc Son District. It is one of Hanoi's most enchanting festivals and offers an invitation to experience Vietnam's ancient traditions firsthand.

The Giong Festival is rooted in the legend of Thanh Giong, a miraculous child from Phu Dong Village who grew at an extraordinary pace and led the Vietnamese people to victory against foreign invaders. To honor his heroic deeds, he was deified as Genie Giong, and each year, locals and visitors gather to pay tribute to his bravery. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, the festival is a testament to Vietnam’s rich cultural history and communal spirit.

A hallmark of the festival is the series of sacred offerings, each carrying profound meaning. The Bamboo Flower Tree, crafted by the people of Ve Linh Village, symbolizes national unity and resilience. The Horse Goddess, a striking papier-mâché creation by villagers of Phu Ma Village, honors the warhorses that carried Thanh Giong to victory. The War Elephant, meticulously made by artisans in Duoc Thuong Village, represents the powerful creatures that played a pivotal role in historic battles.

Other significant offerings include betel and areca, prepared by the people of Dan Tao Village, a symbol of respect and hospitality. Elephant grass, presented by Yen Sao villagers, signifies the nourishment of Giong’s warhorse. Additionally, the Female General’s Palanquin, carried by Yen Tang villagers, pays homage to the women who contributed to Vietnam’s military triumphs. The festival also features the Cau Huc ceremony, an ancient folk game symbolizing resilience and martial spirit.

The Giong Festival is not merely a celebration but a living tradition, preserving Vietnam’s heroic past while fostering unity among its people. For travelers seeking a deep cultural experience, this festival offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the rich heritage, symbolic rituals, and communal pride that define Vietnam’s enduring legacy.

Don’t Be Influenced Into Risking Your Life

The allure of adventure can be irresistible. The idea of stepping off the well-trodden tourist paths and experiencing something more authentic, exciting, or exotic can make any traveler’s heart race. Influencers on social media often share stunning images from locations far removed from the usual destinations, sparking a desire to go where fewer people venture. And when local tour operators recommend these lesser-known spots, it’s tempting to pack your bags and set off for a hidden gem. But before you do, consider an important piece of advice—some of these destinations are marked as "Do not travel" for a reason.

While the notion of visiting a place that’s off the beaten track may seem thrilling, it’s crucial to understand that some of these locations carry significant dangers. Even though others might have visited these areas and returned unscathed, the risk is real, and no number of social media likes is worth putting your life in danger.

Travel advisories and warnings are not made lightly. The "Do not travel" notices issued by government agencies like Smartraveller are designed with your safety in mind. These advisories are based on a range of factors including conflict, terrorist activities, political instability, violent crime, and the inability to provide adequate consular assistance. While it may be tempting to dismiss these warnings in favor of adventure, the risks of ignoring them can be catastrophic.

What’s so dangerous about these destinations? The reality is that the reasons behind the "Do not travel" warnings often involve serious threats to personal safety. This includes the potential for injury or death due to violent crimes or armed conflict. For example, countries like Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia, along with certain regions within other countries such as Mindanao in the Philippines and parts of Colombia, are considered unsafe. These places have been the sites of terrorist attacks, violent social unrest, and armed conflicts. In some areas, foreign nationals, including tourists, have been specifically targeted.

In addition to the risk of injury or death, there is also the risk of kidnapping. In many "Do not travel" locations, tourists have been abducted by terrorist or militant groups. These groups often hold tourists for ransom or use them as leverage to meet political demands. Tragically, not all victims are released unharmed. Kidnappings can be traumatic, and in some instances, the kidnappers have killed their captives if their demands weren’t met.

Another serious danger in these regions is the risk of arbitrary detention. Foreign nationals in "Do not travel" destinations have been detained without clear charges or trial, often under harsh conditions that can severely impact their health and well-being. This arbitrary detention can last for extended periods, sometimes even years. The Australian Government, in particular, may have limited ability to intervene or assist in these situations, leaving travelers stranded without support.

Moreover, if something goes wrong, you may not be covered by your travel insurance. Most standard travel insurance policies do not cover trips to "Do not travel" destinations. If the travel advice changes after you’ve booked your trip, and the destination becomes a "Do not travel" area, you’re unlikely to be able to cancel your trip or receive compensation. Even if you do have insurance, many policies specifically exclude coverage for locations marked as high-risk. Always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to ensure you fully understand your coverage.

So, before booking a flight to an off-the-beaten-path destination, take the time to check the travel advisories. Make sure the area you're considering is not marked with a "Do not travel" warning. Even if the overall safety advice for a country seems manageable, take the time to check for any specific areas within that country that may be dangerous.

Your safety should always come first. When it comes to choosing your next destination, remember that no amount of social media fame, influencer endorsement, or thrill-seeking is worth jeopardizing your life. Follow travel advisories, stay informed, and make decisions that ensure your safety and well-being. Adventure and discovery are exciting, but they should never come at the expense of your health or security. Stay smart and travel safely.

Vietnamese Pho Continues to Spread Its International Reach to Sydney

On the opening day, Pho Ha Noi 1979 attracted
a lot of Vietnamese Pho lovers. Photo VNA
Vietnamese Pho has long been a symbol of the country’s rich culinary heritage, captivating food lovers across the globe. This fragrant noodle soup, deeply embedded in Vietnam’s culture, has now become a beloved dish in many international cities, from North America to Europe and Australia. More than just a meal, Pho represents a connection to tradition, a comforting experience that transports diners to the bustling streets of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City with every spoonful.

A recent testament to Pho’s global appeal is the opening of “Pho Ha Noi 1979” in Sydney, Australia. Located in the vibrant Burwood district, the restaurant has already drawn crowds eager to indulge in an authentic taste of Vietnam. Diners lined up on opening day, enticed by the rich aroma of simmering broth, a scent they likened to a “symphony of flavors.”

The key to Pho’s enduring popularity lies in its meticulously prepared broth. Slow-cooked for hours with beef bones, star anise, cinnamon, and other fragrant spices, the broth achieves a depth of flavor that is both complex and comforting. Served over silky rice noodles and topped with fresh herbs, Pho is further personalized with additions like lime, chili, bean sprouts, and garlic vinegar, allowing each diner to craft their perfect bowl.

Tommy Le, the manager of Pho Ha Noi 1979, was inspired to bring this Northern Vietnamese staple to Australia after hearing from countless locals who had traveled to Vietnam and fallen in love with the dish. Determined to replicate the authentic flavors of Hanoi, he and his team adhere strictly to traditional cooking methods, using only natural ingredients and omitting MSG to ensure a fresh and wholesome experience.

The restaurant welcomed many diners on the opening day
Among those attending the grand opening was Nguyen Trong Thin, a renowned Pho master from Hanoi with over four decades of experience. He expressed immense pride in seeing young Vietnamese entrepreneurs bring their culinary heritage to an international stage. He even joined the restaurant’s kitchen staff for the day, helping to prepare bowls of Pho to ensure the highest quality and authenticity.

Pho’s reach extends beyond just the Vietnamese diaspora. On opening day, the restaurant welcomed not only Vietnamese expatriates but also a diverse mix of international diners. One enthusiastic Chinese customer raved about the dish, calling it “number one,” while Henry Nguyen, a long-time Sydney resident, remarked that the Pho transported him back to his childhood in Hanoi, evoking cherished memories of family meals.

The success of Pho Ha Noi 1979 is just one example of how Pho continues to thrive worldwide, cementing its status as a global culinary treasure. As more restaurants dedicated to authentic Vietnamese flavors open across different continents, the love for Pho only grows, further strengthening its role as a
cultural ambassador for Vietnam’s rich gastronomic tradition.

Ahead of the upcoming ITB Berlin, Khiri Travel has unveiled a series of sensory urban day tours and multi-day colonial heritage experiences that will transport guests to the heart of the region's past and present.

The sensory tours, which are now available in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam, invite visitors to experience Southeast Asia through all five senses. These private, guided tours offer a unique way to explore the vibrant cities of the region, engaging travelers with the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations that make each destination so unforgettable. From watching a breathtaking sunset over golden stupas in Cambodia, to savoring the aroma of fresh turmeric while crafting a herbal drink in Indonesia, these experiences bring the spirit of the region to life in ways that go beyond traditional sightseeing. Guests will also have the chance to hear the sounds of Balinese gamelan music, taste exotic street food, and indulge in relaxing yoga or massage sessions that promote mindfulness and well-being. With Laos, the Philippines, and Myanmar to be added in the near future, these sensory tours are set to provide a deeper, more intimate connection with Southeast Asia's diverse cultures.

 Khiri Travel
In addition to these sensory tours, Khiri Travel has launched a new series of heritage and history tours that focus on Southeast Asia's colonial past. These multi-day itineraries, which range from nine to 13 days, take travelers on a journey through some of the most stunning 19th-century mansions and hotels in the region. Guests will visit grand estates and antique-filled mansions that hark back to the days of European explorers like Henri Mouhot and Francis Garnier. Among the highlights are heritage buildings that have been converted into luxury hotels, including The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta, Azerai La Residence in Hue, 137 Pillars in Chiang Mai, and Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan. These tours also offer expert insights from local historians and photographers, such as Francis Engelmann in Luang Prabang and Rehahn in Hoi An, whose award-winning photography focuses on the ethnic groups of Vietnam. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history lover, or simply a traveler seeking to explore the elegance and charm of a bygone era, these tours promise an unforgettable journey into Southeast Asia’s colonial heritage.

Khiri Travel's commitment to providing unique, high-quality experiences is further reflected in their upgraded online Agent Hub, where travel agents can access detailed information on both the sensory and heritage tour series. The new, user-friendly platform will be soft-launched at ITB Berlin in March and offers a range of tools to help agents find the perfect tour based on their clients' preferences. With features such as a sophisticated keyword search, categories like "Wow!" and "Signature," and an online photo gallery for marketing and promotional purposes, the Agent Hub will enhance the booking process for agents around the world.

Port Stephens Takes the Crown as Australia’s Top Coastal Destination

Port Stephens
Port Stephens has secured its place as one of Australia’s most sought-after holiday spots, being named Wotif’s 2025 Aussie Town of the Year. The stunning New South Wales coastal haven, known for its golden beaches, towering sand dunes, and thriving marine life, has experienced a surge in popularity, with a 75 per cent increase in accommodation searches throughout 2024.

The recognition comes after an impressive year for Port Stephens’ tourism industry, which saw the region claim multiple accolades at the 2024 NSW Tourism Awards. Moonshadow-TQC Cruises earned silver in the Major Tour & Transport Operators category, while 4WD Tours R Us and Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary also received silver in their respective categories. Adding to the list of achievements, The Poyer’s Restaurant at Lemon Tree Passage was awarded Seafood Restaurant of the Year at the Sydney Fish Market’s 2024 Seafood Excellence Awards.

Recent data from Tourism Research Australia highlights the region’s growing appeal, with 800,000 domestic overnight visitors recorded in the year ending September 2024, reflecting a 2.4 per cent increase year-on-year. Visitor spending also rose significantly, reaching $700 million, marking an 11.5 per cent jump. International tourism is also on the rise, with 27,500 visitors contributing $13.4 million to the local economy.

Port Stephens is gearing up for an even bigger tourism boom in 2025, with several key events and infrastructure projects set to elevate the region’s profile further. One of the most anticipated events, Sail Port Stephens, will take place from 31 March to 4 May 2025, drawing thousands of visitors and injecting an estimated $2 million into the local economy.

Another major development on the horizon is the opening of Newcastle Airport’s international terminal on 1 August 2025. This milestone, supported by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Destination NSW and Newcastle Airport, includes airline incentives and strategic marketing support to enhance international connectivity. Located just minutes from Port Stephens, the expanded airport is expected to unlock new travel opportunities, positioning the region as a key gateway for both domestic and international visitors.

The tourism momentum continues beyond Australian borders, with Nelson Bay-based Moonshadow-TQC Cruises among 18 NSW tourism operators set to participate in a Destination NSW trade mission to the United States in March 2025. The North America Roadshow will include workshops and networking events in Los Angeles and New York, strengthening ties with global travel buyers and further cementing Port Stephens’ reputation as a must-visit destination.

Minister for Tourism John Graham emphasized the significance of these developments, stating that Port Stephens represents the world-class experiences driving growth in the NSW visitor economy. From its pristine coastline and rich cultural heritage to its exceptional dining and adventure tourism offerings, the region delivers the authentic and memorable travel experiences modern visitors seek.

Port Stephens’ triumph in the Wotif awards was part of a broader success story for regional NSW, with Kingscliff and Yamba also securing spots in the top 10 Aussie Towns of the Year. Acting CEO of Destination NSW, Karen Jones, highlighted that with more NSW towns featured in the rankings than any other state, the region continues to captivate travelers both locally and internationally.

With new research indicating that 78 per cent of Australians plan to travel domestically in 2025—a notable increase from the previous year—Port Stephens is set to welcome even more visitors eager to explore its breathtaking landscapes, thrilling outdoor activities, and world-class hospitality.

For those planning their next escape, Port Stephens offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, making it an unmissable destination for 2025 and beyond.
