International visitors by month of 2024 (thousands of arrivals) |
Strong Growth Across Key Markets
In the first 11 months of 2024, Vietnam welcomed a total of 15.8 million international visitors, a significant milestone in the nation’s tourism recovery. A staggering 80% of these arrivals came from Asia, with the major markets of Northeast Asia playing a pivotal role. Countries such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan collectively accounted for nearly 60% of the total international visitor arrivals.
Among the top contributors, South Korea led the way with 4.1 million visitors, representing a substantial 26.1% of all international arrivals. Following South Korea, China recorded 3.3 million visitors, while Taiwan (China), Japan, and the United States rounded out the top five markets.
Noteworthy Growth from Northeast Asia
The rapid growth in visitor numbers from Northeast Asia has been one of the key drivers of Vietnam’s tourism boom. China, in particular, has shown an impressive 122% increase in arrivals compared to the same period in 2023, while South Korea and Japan saw increases of 28.3% and 24.4%, respectively. Taiwan’s market also grew significantly by 55.3%, further solidifying Northeast Asia’s dominant role in Vietnam’s tourism landscape.
European and Southeast Asian Markets Surge
While Northeast Asia led the way, Europe and Southeast Asia also recorded strong growth. European markets showed remarkable recovery, spurred by Vietnam’s open visa policies introduced in August 2023. Russia led the European surge, with a remarkable 82.4% increase in arrivals, followed by France (44.2%), Germany (38.1%), and Italy (87.5%).
Other European countries also showed positive growth, with the UK up by 32.7%, Poland increasing by 237.6%, and countries like Spain, Norway, and Denmark registering impressive gains.
Meanwhile, Southeast Asia was also a strong contributor to the growth in Vietnam’s international arrivals, with Indonesia (+78.3%), the Philippines (+69.8%), and Malaysia (+34.8%) showing notable increases. India continued to be a rising market, with a 30.4% growth in arrivals. Singapore also saw a significant increase of 43.2%.
A Positive Outlook for Vietnam’s Tourism
November’s record-breaking results come as a reflection of the country’s continuing success in attracting international tourists. With the government’s open visa policies, enhanced air connectivity, and a thriving local tourism scene, Vietnam has positioned itself as a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia.
Looking forward, the growth trend is expected to continue as international tourists discover the country’s diverse attractions—from the bustling streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to the serene beaches of Phu Quoc and the cultural gems of Hoi An and Hue. As Vietnam embraces its role as a regional tourism hub, the country is well on its way to becoming one of the top destinations in Asia and beyond.
