A new cultural landmark has opened its doors in Hoi An, adding another layer to the city’s rich heritage. The Hoi An Museum of Local Products officially opened at 57 Tran Phu Street, Hoi An city, in Quang Nam province, marking a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 25th anniversary of Hoi An’s UNESCO World Heritage recognition. This anniversary, celebrated on December 4, 2024, acknowledges Hoi An as one of Vietnam’s most historically significant and culturally rich towns.

A Tribute to Hoi An’s Cultural and Culinary Legacy

The museum, which spans 240 square meters, presents a fascinating glimpse into the local products and traditions that have shaped Hoi An and the broader Quang Nam province. It serves as both a cultural showcase and a space for visitors to explore the region's history through the lens of its vibrant local industries. The museum is divided into four key themes:

  1. An Overview of Hoi An and Quang Nam Local Products – A general introduction to the region’s rich agricultural and artisanal traditions.

  2. Hoi An as a Hub for Spices and Local Specialties – A focus on Hoi An’s role as a center for spice trade, including a display of the town’s key spices and ingredients that have long been sought after.

  3. Typical Products from Hoi An and Quang Nam – Featuring local specialties such as bird’s nest, lao leaves, pepper, areca, cinnamon, tea, and agarwood.

  4. The Development of Hoi An’s Tradition – An exploration of the town’s history, highlighting how these local products contributed to the evolution of its culture and economy.

Highlighting the Richness of Quang Nam’s Heritage

The museum’s mission is to preserve and celebrate the cultural significance of these local products, many of which have been integral to the livelihood of the people in Hoi An and Quang Nam for generations. Pham Phu Ngoc, Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Center, emphasized the importance of the museum in creatively promoting the region's heritage, describing it as a unique attraction for both locals and visitors.

The museum is a tribute to Hoi An’s position as a hub of commerce, culture, and craftsmanship, showcasing the town’s historical connection to spice trading, traditional herbal medicine, and local artisanal industries.

In conjunction with the museum’s opening, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Conservation Center also launched the book "Spices and Local Products of Hoi An, Quang Nam". This book contains 38 articles that delve into the historical significance of the region’s local products, their role in shaping the local economy, and their preservation over the years. It offers readers a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural history and its ongoing efforts to safeguard its intangible heritage.
